Have to say I'm not really a fan of the olive green old uniform, just somehow don't look prefessional and sharp enough.

It wasn't suppose to look professional, it was supposed to look revolutionary. The PLA for much of its history wasn't a conventional army like others in the world.

Note the Load vests warn by both the Pakistanis and the PLA.
Although not body armor it bares a strong resemblance too a number available and used by western forces in particular Blackhawk's omega elite series.
The Safety glasses and the Bi pods on the Type 95's. small but big moves too western gear.

The bi-pod is on the SAW version of the Type 95. The guy just had a normal rifle mag in the gun at the time.

Special forces rarely wear body armor because for them, speed, mobility, agility and stamina are paramount, and body armor, however light, greatly impedes all of those attributes.

The safety glasses were the SSG's gear. The photo of the PLA guys wearing them was just them trying it on. Notice in the 'live action' photos during the exercises, the SSG guys were wearing the protective goggles while the PLA guys were not.

These are the small but important differences in equipment between an army at peace and an army that is seeing regular real action.

American and British forces never used to wear protective goggles, but after going into Afghanistan and Iraq, they have become standard issue.
