Who to say they won't get back onto the front line after a quick briefing on the OPORDER before the field exercise begins? The guy on the far left is a "Senior Colonel" (Colonel in the US Army rank) therefore a Brigade/ Regimental commander.

Based on the position of the thumb placed on the guy's face (below the nose), it looks like the guy passed out. People were trying to wake him up by pinching his acupunctural point below the nose... Tough training...
