IF this is a medium tank that some members here claim.... what is the shift in doctrine to have a medium tank now? People say it is to replace the ZTZ-96 but the ZTZ 96 is always a MBT but an older generation that is upgraded heavily to be a cheaper alternative than 99A. Not a medium tank.

I dont see in which theater/terrain will this cover when ZTQ-15 covers the jungles and mountains, and 99a for plains.

Or alternatively, this is still a MBT in weight and protection, and the firepower is sufficient to handle any current generation of MBT. ( I am not holding my breath for challenger 3 with british army's procurement, and USA next mbt with when they are addicted to Abrams)
ZTZ-96 isn't even in the same weight class as ZTZ-99A while both being MBTs. ZTZ-99A weigh like 55 tons while the ZTZ-96A weighs only 42 tons. ZTZ-96A can also be carried aboard LCACs while the ZTZ-99A cannot. 99A also cannot be used down south or basically anywhere that isn't the northern plains because of weight. This tank is just going to replace all the 96As/88/59 and whatever else they have in service that can't be efficiently replaced by ZTZ-99A due to its weight. So, it should be an MBT but a lighter one to replace all the older light MBTs PLAGF has in service, while ZTZ-99A will require its own heavy MBT replacement.

It is to cover Chinese invasion of Japan, Philippines and Australia. Happy Now?

PLA is looking for a smaller weight tank because it will be easier to transport, easier on mountainous and jungle terrain. It will allow faster mobility and expeditionary capability.

Why this when ZTQ-15 exist? Cause ZTQ-15 is an old gen tank with much lower capability.

What if you could get type-99 level armor, firepower along with drone defense APS, Radar and all that but only in the weight of ZTQ-15? What if you could get Abrams Gas turbine level performance but in diesel?

That is the the new MBT.

I still think it's kind of based too much on stuff they already have. Look the Japanese Type 10 tank. They went with 120mm.

Type 10 had similar design requirements with regards to mobility.

To be fair, ZTQ-15 is quite likely lighter in all configurations, but especially the stripped one.
i.e. we probably shall wait for official commentary here, we've reached the wall for guesstimating.
