Could be two intakes on the bottom and one intake on top?

I think it would be cleaner to just have two intakes that each have a branch which joins together for the central engine -- additional intakes are a source of signature returns and complicates external shaping.

Of course that needs to be offset by the need for the side intakes to be correspondingly larger versus if they were each only feeding a single engine versus "one and a half" engines... But my gut tells me it would be preferable.

If it takes up internal volume that get in the way of a more voluminous weapons bay splitting the tunnels might be a smarter use of space.

And so some quick modifications later. Doesn't look too ugly now does it. Though I must admit, I do think my intakes are too small.

Oh my this looks MUCH more pleasant. The difference is astounding.

Remember the patent about folding/conforming tails we saw a while ago? I think the J-XD will really have to employ this in order to maximise all-aspect stealth to make it truly a head and shoulders above a standard 5th Gen.

Yeah, I think that would very much depend on the internal geometry of the ducting and engine placement.

I could see the branching happening relatively aft in the fuselage, for example

I remember this study. This thing is pretty much as good as it gets.

One more thing, I believe the tail is foldable. We have similar tail design even in some h20 rumors. So it is not surprising to have a foldable tail in a fighter
Exactly. There's a patent on exactly this which I mentioned:
