I wonder what does GT stand for. The ship looks like a Coast Guard ship, because of the water cannon behind the exhaust and the auto-cannon at the front.

Pretty interesting pictures. In the first, the PLAN Chief, Admiral Wu Shengli, is holding the umbrella for Professor Ma Weiming, who has led his team developing EMALS, EM Railgun and IES related programs for the Navy; in the second, Professor Ma appears to be giving a presentation/lecture to Admiral Wu and his staff.

I think the ear muffs are most likely for better audio, kinda like earbuds for museum audio tours.
