I should not said hangar space, I meant rear deck space for helicopter landing. While we don't know the exact dimensions of the hangar of 054a. It's widely believed the stretched 052DL rear deck is meant for adopting the eventual Z-20 helicopter. If PLA don't think Z-20 can safely land on the rear deck of 052D, I doubt they want to operate Z-20 on 054a. For Z-20 helicopter, there are many design parameters, and being small enough to land on the deck of 054a is probably not one of them.

Also, for the 054a there was a hull modification early on in the series, one of the benefit of the change was increased rear deck space, but that's a minor change compare to 052DL.
I remember that S-70 of other navies have landed and parked on the helicopter deck of 054a.............

Naval Military helicopter can land in smaller helipad by moving the location of the rear landing gear to front. You can see from the comparison photo of Z-20. This is beneficial for emergency, resupply, and certain operations during calm sea state. For helicopter to safely operate from a helipad, the pad should be roughly the same length as the helicopter.Screenshot_20220221-002941.jpg

Seahawk family helicopters have landed on existing "normal/legacy PLAN helipad size" surface combatants before -- here an 054A and 052C respectively in the two pictures.

So the footprint compatibility is certainly there.

Whether it would be ideal to routinely operate them from helipads of that size, is another matter.

All figures approx..

Type 052D and Type 054A flight deck length 20 m

Type 052DL flight deck lengthened to 24m, supposedly for Z-20

FFG7 OHP flight deck lengthened to 23m to accommodate SH-60 (proxy for Z-20 here)

SH-60 length overall rotors turning 20m

Yes, depending upon sea state there may be some over-hang past the stern

20 m flight deck in non-warlike conditions may be acceptable, but not in conflict.

I have flown many times in military helicopters (not as a pilot), pilots don't want to be too close to obstacles.

Hangar size is irrelevant in this discussion.

How many Z-9 can an 054A or an 052D hold in its hangar? How many do they routinely operate with?
