Two Chinese warships have set sail for Indonesia and the second edition of the Indonesia-hosted multi-national exercise in waters off Padang, and Siberut and Sapura islands, Indonesia.

in which a heavily armed Chinese patrol vessel on March 19 ordered a smaller Indonesian Navy vessel to free a Chinese fishing boat caught fishing illegally in the Natuna Sea. The Chinese fishing boat was inside the Indonesian exclusive economic zone.

Tensions are continually on the rise in the South China Sea as China is reclaiming land and sea, and claiming most of the territory for itself.

Every single country wants good relations with China, and the closer they are geographically, the more they want it. So, it's wise for Indonesia to involve China in some civil and military affairs to generate or maintain good relations. Additionally, Jakarta's invitation could present Canberra another variable to ponder in their disputes.

Yes, I'm not trying to get political here, but I think my country tends to underestimate how big of a deal Indonesia is going to be in the not very distant future. We could use a wake up call.

I watched a video of SBY's speech to the Australian Parliament in 2012, and his message was Australia-Indonesia relations weren't good/need work. I don't think relations have improved much under Widodo/Abbott/Trumbull, so I'm surprised there's more talk about Australia dabbling in US-China great power politics than focusing on repairing relations with a developing Islamic state right off its shores, with ten times Australia's population and a trillion dollars economy.

Abbott actually did quite a few things to make the relationship deteriorate further, and Turnbull is too preoccupied with domestic considerations to put much effort into fixing the relationship. He also needs to keep the neoconservative wing of his party on side. On the flip side, the Indonesian president is still pretty new and trying to sort things out himself. I guess this isn't the thread for this discussion though.

Just for the record, to anyone unfamiliar with the photo...

This is quite an old photo, from about three years ago. It was a nice photo back then, and still is now.

But it was from 2013 (one can even see a timestamp at the very bottom of the photo), so it's not exactly new.
