As already partially confirmed the gun and/or missile CIWS and the universal VLS are likely, though I have a hard time picturing where the universal VLS would fit on the Sovs.

VLS could be fit where the Shtil launchers were placed. Given the Shtil launchers penetrated the deck quite a bit (due to underdeck rearming/arsenal mechanism) a VLS could fit there quite handily.

The question I'm curious about is how many VLS could fit on the Sovs as well as 051B, assuming they do get fit onto them.

Also, the question is whether the Navy would have the foresight to arm them with the universal VLS or merely the 054A's HHQ-16/VLA compatible VLS, which would make the ships somewhat less flexible in role.

Hopefully this is "mostly" accurate rather then "vaguely" (or mostly wrong...) :)

The Impressive Commissioning Pace of the Chinese Navy (PLAN) in 2015
2015 was a record year for the the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) in terms of new vessels procurement. No less than 3 destroyers, 4 frigates and 5 corvettes were commissioned into the Chinese fleet. Let's take a look back at the impressive number of units that joined the PLAN's fleet last year.

Impressive. Good documentation.

A minor error:

» First steel cutting for China's fourth Aircraft Carrier, Type 002, may happen this year at Changxing Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai.

Should be "China's third Aircraft Carrier, Type 002,"

YEs, I believe you are correct and that has to be a typo

002 is the third carrier and it probably has had first steel cut.

Now. if they end up building a class of two 002s, then as soon as the space is available in Dalian, they may start that fourth one there. Just depends on how fast they intend to build them.

Haibing (hull number 722), the first ship of the new Type 272 class of icebreakers for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy), has started its military service following a ceremony marking its commission held at a naval port in Huludao, northeast China's Liaoning province a few days ago.

I wonder if it will be going into the Arctic or Antarctic on her first mission.:)

I think it's meant to clear the local waters of ice:

The Haibing 722 will take on the tasks of ice condition investigation, ice breaking and maritime search and rescue in ice zone in the Bohai waters (

What's difference between the PLAN ice breaker and the civilian ones?

Can't the navy just call on the civilian breakers for when they need them

Or maybe they want their own for independent deployments
