US Opfor has changed models a number of times to suit the missions needed and perceived threat. During operational deployments Opfor remodeled into operations in MOUT against nonconventional threats mixed among a civilian population.Its a great example of the PLA's latest opfor training philosophy, whereby they are giving the Blue Army all sorts of advantages, and pretty much making life as hard and unfair as it is possible for the regular Red Army troops (while still giving the Red Army a chance, so its not totally hopeless for them).
The goal is to take them out of their comfort zone, and make them develop innovative tactics and strategies to counter the superior equipment, situational awareness and "luck" of the Blue Army.
That is in stark contrast to western opfor training, which seems far more geared towards simulating "realistic", but distinctly inferior (in equipment at least) opfor.
Basically, the Chinese always assume they will be facing a superior enemy, and their training is geared towards how to beat said superior enemy and/or how to wrestle the advantage from the enemy while at a significant technological disadvantage.
Western forces always assume they will always have, and keep the upper hand, so their training is more focused on how to make the best use of their equipment and resources to maximise results and minimise possible losses.
There are good reasons, grounded the reality, for why the two choose the focus and methods they do, but I favour the Chinese approach overall, because their training philosophy would maximise the chances of winning all kinds of conflicts, but it small scale skirmish, up to and including total war.
The western approach means they are going to be more efficient than the PLA are thumping hopelessly outmatched foes, in the kinds of overwhelmingly one-sided wars the west has become accustomed to fighting.
However, it leaves a big question mark over just how well western forces will be able to adapt and cope if they ever come up against an enemy who has weaponry and technology of a similar level, or even superior to themselves, with the numbers to match.
Totally OT, but that is the main reason why I think China will be able to punch way above its weight if Aliens ever invade.
Prior to that the primary model was a force on force model using equal forces based on the soviet model.
Since the withdrawal from Iraq Transition has began moving to a number of different units based on a number of different models at different locations. This works as the US and NATO forces deploy more often. The simulations are not as controlled as you seem to make it out wolf, blue for tends to loose just as often as win.

China to Show its High-Tech Weapons During Massive WWII Parade
Next week’s parade in Beijing is set to be a historic commemoration of the Chinese victory over Japan in World War II. To mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, China will showcase its latest high-tech weaponry.
The festivities will feature one of the most large-scale parades in the nation’s history. Nearly 12,000 troops will take part, but the Chinese government will also take the opportunity to highlight its latest military hardware, most of which will be unveiled for the first time.
"They represent the new development, new achievements and new images of the building of the Chinese armed forces," said Qu Rui, a military official organizing the event, according to Reuters.
On display will be 500 pieces of equipment, including modern tanks. A number of long-range ballistic missiles have been spotted during rehearsals, and according to Xinhua news agency, the Second Artillery Force, the military’s nuclear division, will showcase seven different types of missiles.
"The scale and number of missiles will surpass any previous outing," an official told Xinhua.
The parade will also feature nearly 200 aircraft, including fighters, bombers, and carrier-based aircraft. The latest J-15 carrier-based fighter has been spotted during rehearsals, and a lead pilot told Xinhua that an upgraded long-range bomber will fly overhead.
A squadron of military helicopters has also been observed during warmups.
A record number of foreign leaders will be in attendance, and military delegations from ten nations – including Russia – will also take part.
"At the moment, 30 heads of state confirmed their consent to participate in the events, it will be the largest event in the history of China regarding the number of participating heads of states," Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said during a press conference on Thursday.
A number of world leaders, however, have refused Beijing’s invitation. Both US President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have declined, sending ambassadors instead. Most European leaders have made similar arrangements.
By skipping the event, Western leaders are attempting to signal their displeasure with what they see as Chinese aggression in the East and South China Seas. Despite the parade’s true intentions, many experts predict that the event will be seen as aggressive by rival Pacific nations.
"It’s possible that Japan and Southeast Asian countries will interpret this as a kind of warning to them," political scientist Xie Yue told Reuters. "I can’t say whether that’s warranted or not."
The Chinese government, however, has repeatedly stressed that the parade is about commemorating a historic event.
"The parade is intended to commemorate history, cherish the memory of our fallen revolutionary soldiers, uphold peace and usher in the future, with no other countries targeted," Qu said.
The event will be held in Beijing on September 3. To honor the victory of Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the parade will march through Tiananmen Square

Well, when the marines attack beaches, they come from the ocean. The defenders positioned inland would look toward the ocean for any sign of the marines. And they would see much of the ocean and sky, both of which would be blue. Hence the blue background, my guess...
