That's true. He also flew combat missions during the Korean War and achieved several kills before he was shot down. When the North Koreans captured him they thought he was an American at first due to his appearance.

A lot of the people responsible for PLAAF's modernization (Song Wencong, Lin Hu, etc.) have passed away recently. At least they are fortunate enough to see their efforts bear fruit.
