(6) Y-8 AEWs, that's impressive! Hope they build up numbers, proportionate to their combat requirements.

what base is that, with 9 shelters? does anyone have the coordinates?

9 shelters for kj2000 and kj200 both? or are plaaf's kj2000 kept at a separate base from their own kj200?

we are talking about KJ-200 or also known as Y-8W, the balance beam AWACS

if there is 9 shelters it means they may be making more, who knows how large a PLAAF AWACS Regiment is going to be

but lets say if they have 12 units in a Regiment that would provide PLAAF with a serious coverage from a single Regiment

what has probably happened is that PLAAF got the initial Y-8W then the deliverys probably switched to PLAN for the Y-8WH, and now PLAAF will start getting the remaining Y-8Ws to complete thier regiment, maybe not a bad idea since they have gathered up experience with the first lot of AWACS

then once the PLAAF Regiment is complete the PLAN Regiment gets more Y-8WH, i guess its having to fullfill prioritys for both armed forces who need these both at the same time

more importantly now the Navy has a AWACS fleet which they can deploy to cover the vast seas that China needs to keep a eye on, i can see the Y-8W numbers running pretty high pretty soon

The KJ-200 has this "balance beam" on the roof instead of a spinning disk. Is there a performance difference between these two configurations ?

i am not sure we can use shelters at that base as any sort of measure of number of awacs. yes, it appears they added two more shelters recently. up until a year ago there were 7. But, those 7 were there since 2005, when kj200 programme was just in prototype stage. And yes, that is 7 in addition to 4 ones for kj2000 system, which are separated from the seven at the south end of the airbase.

It is clear other sort of planes, just not awacs, were using those shelters there. While adding two more shelters may indeed mean two more kj200 are being added to plaaf, it could also just as well mean those are shelters for other kind of new planes or perhaps just belatedly built shelters for existing planes, be those kj200 or other sort.

having lived on a airbase (PAF Minhas Airbase which i visit almost every year) i would say counting shelters is probably one of the most reliable ways of determining a air force inventory, not to mention RAF Leuchars which i can see from my house in Scotland

if i could i would give you a full run down of Kamra, but i wont, as after the last time i did it, terrorists used the internet to plan the attack on the airbase, so in the interest of security i will leave it there
