PLA AEW&C, SIGINT, EW and MPA thread

Captain
Just arrived at Guangzhou from Wuxi. As my flight took off, the KJ-2000's were on prefect display to the right. I managed to film all four KJ-2000's hangars and three of the four as one KJ-2000 was missing, probably on patrol.

I'm concerned though, their parking space look AWFULLY exposed. China only has those four KJ-2000's, what if a civil airliner had a misshap and crashed into them? Not to mention security isn't exactly high as the airport is dual-use for both civil and military flights; quite easy to sabotage those planes using just brute force. The fact that all the passengers seated to the right side of any flights taking off could get a clear view of them is probably already a security breach. I would do better to protect those planes if I were the PLAAF.

more picture of KJ-2000,including the antenna .according to the report.,aside from detecting and tracking of airborne target, the radar also capable tracking ground target.
I recall during the 70's USAF E-3A operator also discover the E-3A radar system capable of detecting ground target ,this eventually lead to E-8 ground surveillance aircraft.and during first Chenchye war, russia also utilized A-50 as ground surveillance aircraft.

As an aside, the French also discovered in the 1980's that Atlantique II ASW aircraft were great at tracking movements in the Sahara. That is why you see today Atlantique II at Bamako.

Quick question about the KJ-2000s. How many KJ-2000s does China plan to produce? And what became of the deal to buy the Russian IL-76s to address large procurement of KJ-2000s? Also, if the deal fell through, then what are the chances that the deal could be revived?

China doesnt produce KJ-2000. Its adapts purchased Il-76 planes for AWACS use (KJ-2000). The deal to purchase Il-76 was canned years ago and IMO little to no chance of reviving since china will get Y-20 in the next five years (or so it seems)

If and when will china adapt y-20 for awacs use remains to be seen. But i think y-20 must mature enough for the chinese to be comfortable to convert it to awacs version.

But that doesn't make sense at all. If China is adapting the IL-76 air-frame for KJ-2000s and there is no revival deal in place to purchase more IL-76s, then is PLAAF expected to survive on just 5-6 KJ-2000s. And with the whole dependency on Y-20, it means that PLAAF would have to wait another 7-8 years before it gets its own AWACS platform. That is not good planning when it comes to planning and development of the Air Force.

Is China planning to off-set this shortage of KJ-2000s, by KJ-200? Would China produce more KJ-200s to keep PLAAF's eye-in-the-sky active and with full area-coverage?

You should not forget that China is acquiring 10 ex Russian Air Force IL-76MD and has acquired 5 ex Belorussian Air Force IL-76TD/MD - which would give China the option to convert additional KJ-2000.

I do not think they will do that, however. There are now 9 shelters for Y-8W (KJ-200) at Wuxi and 6 at Laiyang, indicating there will be a total of 15 Y-8W. That ought to cover PLAAF's and PLANAF's requirements.

about 2~3 years ago, wforum reported that PLAAF consider KJ-2000 is too expensive to maintain and mention AWACS using conformal array antenna similiar to israel G550 as a future trend.
