Hello this is my first post. I think transport aircraft and their special mission variants are key to logistics and success of any mission. Is anyone tracking some Y-8 aircraft at Dingxin? Not anything like a kq-200 or kj-500 nor a jamming capable aircraft, but definitely more specialized than just transport. And where would I get better satellite imagery from? I would like to show an image of the aircraft but I have currently lost it, thanks :)

The tail number on the aircraft are not subordinate to PLAAF, PLANAF, nor any theater command, as far as i know it is directly subordinate to a facility at the base.

According to the image from Defense Technical Information Center, this KJ-500 (Y-9 special mission aircraft) has a tail number 30078 which conveys that it is subordinate to a PLAAF unit. I am just curious about the Y-8 aircraft at Dingxin airfield and wondered if anyone had satellite imagery or any ideas to what the aircraft is intended for.

Also from Defense Technical Information Center, here is an image of a PLANAF KQ-200 anti-submarine special mission aircraft with the tail number 82014.

I must admit, I'm still not sure what you really want and even more how anyone of us should be able to track Y-8 at or from Dingxin - in fact one of the most secret PLAAF bases - ...

This is from my understanding the only two known images of a Y-8C (left no. 78367) and below a Y-8CG (no. 78366 - also known as GD) assigned to the 175th AB:

What is this "Defense Technical Information Center"?? Is this just a side that collects images?

Here serial number 30078 represents aircraft no. 08 within the 26th Special Mission Air Division, 76th Airborne Command and Control Regiment (30x7x numbers) based at Mahuiling, however this image is old and that particular aircraft was then based at Wuxi-Shuofang.

But again there si no relevance or connection to Dingxin!

Yes, but what's the point? The tail number - in fact an old one since they all now carry two digit low visibility numbers - shows it was a KQ-200 assigned to the 1st Naval Aviation Division, 2nd Air Regiment (according to its 82x1x serial number with xx = aircraft no. 04).

Wow! thank you! those are very nice images. How do you know that it is subordinate to the 175th? the 78366 and 78367 look more similar to a fighter tail number than a special mission aircraft.

Well, that's how the serial numbering system of the PLAAF works ... if you know the system, you know the unit and the 175th AB is not only a fighter unit (currently flying J-16) but also dedicated FTTC unit.

Now that I think about it... do any other PLAAF units have both fighters and special mission aircraft? Dont you think that's a bit odd?
