And there is a second claim of interest by Kuwait.

Both are Abrams MBT users with upgrades and new units on order.
Now Kuwait also uses 150 M84AB MBT They ordered more but the maker was Yugoslavia and that broke up before the order was completed. These Tanks are getting older so it may be that the Kuwaitis are looking to replace them.
As for the Saudis It may be that they were looking to buy T90SM because of the issues late in the Obama admin it may also be that they want to supplement their Abrams units and increase their Tank forces. Or it could just be want of a Cheaper tank. the T90Sm having a unit price of 4.6 which is half the price of the latest Abrams.

As chinese made weapon systems become more sophisticated and advanced you will see a shift in the global arms trade as many nations will get a mix of both us and chinese made ones with russia thrown in the miz here and there. Generally speaking it's not good to hedge all your eggs in one basket.

One thing about china is be it good or bad their political system is stable from a standpoint of foreign policies and FMS. you know where they stand and odds are it will remain the same in the forseeable future.

From their eyes, the US not so much as we all know. It could change every 4 year or 8 years. Who know.. 4 yrs from now we have an anti 'insert country of choice' POTUS and/or legislative branch.. I think many nations have wised up to that especially non NATO ones and emerging markets are the honest buyers out there. They are not so much bound to buying only from us.

Israeli air defense missile system David's Sling ready to become operational in the next few days.

The latest generation of Israeli air defense missile system David's Sling is ready to become operational with the IAF (Israeli air Force) in the next few days. The David’s Sling system was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in cooperation with Raytheon, and is designed to provide active defense from medium range missiles.

The David’s Sling Weapon System project is a cooperative effort between the United States and Israel to develop a defense against large caliber rockets and short-range ballistic missiles. It is able to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, medium- to long-range rockets, as well as cruise missiles fired at ranges between 40 to 300 km.

Recently, Israeli air Force held a final inspection to check the preparedness of the David’s Sling for operational deployment with the Israeli Armed Forces. An official ceremony will be held on 2 April 2017 to announce that the first battalion of David’s Sling air defense system is operational.

In January 2017, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency has announced that the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) successfully completed a test series of the David’s Sling Weapons System, a missile defense system that is a central part of Israel’s multi-layer anti-missile array.

The David's Sling will replace U.S.

Egypt Reportedly Considering Purchasing More Rafales

A year after completing an order for the Dassault Rafale, Cairo has reportedly reentered negotiations with France regarding the procurement of additional fighter jets. On June 15, La Tribune

that Egypt is in discussions with Dassault Aviation for the acquisition of 12 more Rafales.

La Tribune reports that some sources believe it is possible a contract could be reached before the end of this year, while others are more cautious about the timeframe for completion. As of yet, no side has commented on the reports of ongoing negotiations.

Egypt and France formally signed an agreement worth 5.2 billion euros on the acquisition of 24 Rafales, as well as MBDA missiles and a FREMM naval vessel, in February 2015. Of the 24 Rafales, 16 are two-seater Rafale DMs, while the remaining eight are single-seater Rafale EMs.

of three arrived in January of this year. These shipments marked the first export of the Rafale jet. Ahead of the deliveries, Egyptian pilots and maintenance crews trained in France on the operation of the systems.

According to IHS Jane's Defence Weekly, the Rafales are

AASM HAMMER air-to-ground missiles, the two versions of MBDA's MICA short- and beyond visual range air-to-air missiles, Exocet AM39 anti-ship missiles, and the SCALP long-range standoff cruise missile.

The agreement reached with France included an option for 12 more Rafales, which forms the basis of the framework for the current negotiations reported by La Tribune. A follow-on contract would be good news for Dassault Aviation, which wants to sell Rafales to

Similar to the initial order, it is unclear how Cairo will opt to finance a follow-on order. As noted alongside the announcement of the first sale in February 2015, experts

that it was possible France or Gulf countries provided loans to Egypt to aid in the acquisition. Egypt make seek a similar arrangement for an additional order of Rafales, though details of financing remain limited.

Alongside the Rafale, Cairo has negotiated with Russia for the acquisition of other fighter jets. Egypt was reported to have purchased

Rumors continue to abound that Egypt is also buying Russian Su-35s. These rumors were recently fueled by an Egyptian television report that mentioned Cairo was purchasing 29 unspecified Sukhoi military aircraft, though this could be easily have been a reference to another system, such as the Su-30SM, and not the Su-35.

The fighter jet acquisitions are part of a larger Egyptian program of procuring new military systems to boost its conventional deterrent power and improve the military's counterinsurgency efforts. Under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt has purchased a frigate, corvettes, naval helicopter carrier vessels, fighter jets, helicopters, and missiles.

Israel Air Force have 10 land batteries of 3 launchers planned 15

Israel Navy to double Iron Dome defenses on new surface ships

In response to the growing rocket threat to Israel’s offshore energy assets, the Israel Navy is tweaking the design of its new Sa’ar-6 corvettes now under contract in Germany to make room for twice as many Iron Dome interceptors as originally planned.

In an interview at Navy headquarters in Tel Aviv, a senior officer said growing quantities of 122mm Grad-type rockets and longer-range projectiles in the arsenals of Lebanon-based Hizbollah has prompted the Navy to rethink early requirements, which called for a single Iron Dome launcher to be integrated into each of the four ships now under contract with Kiel, Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

“Because of this growing threat, we’re adding another [Iron Dome] launcher on the Sa’ar-6,” the officer said of the new, 1800-ton displacement versions of the Blohm+Voss Class 130 corvette selected by Israel for defense of offshore assets in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

According to the officer, each new Sa’ar-6 will be house two Iron Dome launchers, each capable of firing as many as 20 Tamir intercepting missiles. Those sea-based Iron Domes will defend against disruptive, possibly deadly and inexpensive shore-launched rockets while the Barak-8 anti-missile and air-defense system will defend ships as well as offshore assets against much more sophisticated and deadly threats, such as the supersonic, anti-ship P800 Yakhont cruise missile.

Both vertically-launched systems – Iron Dome and Barak-8 – will be supported by the ELM-2248 Adir, a multi-function surveillance, track and guidance radar by Elta Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). In order to accommodate the radar’s four phased array panels, the Israel Navy has been working for the past year to redesign the German vessel’s baseline bow section to house three panels and the shape of the rear mast to house the final phased array panel.

It’s also been working for more than a year to redesign the crew berthing area to accommodate the radar and the Iron Dome and Barak-8 intercepting systems. The latest decision to add another Iron Dome launcher could delay slightly Israel’s receipt of its first Sa’ar-6, which had been expected to arrive in so-called safe sail mode – without its combat weapons suite – by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

Once the first ship arrives here, others are expected to follow in six-month intervals.

Meanwhile, in parallel, the Navy is working with local industry to prepare the radars, intercepting systems and supporting electronic warfare suites for installation almost immediately upon the Sa’ar-6’s arrival. According to the senior officer, the service expects it to take about six months to install everything properly and another eight months to one year of integration before the new EEZ-defense vessels can be certified as operational.

“All the locally made systems will be waiting for the ships, and then it will take another period of time for installation and integration,” the officer said.

To mitigate risk, the officer noted that the service is using the INS Lahav, an Israeli-designed, US-built Sa’ar-5 corvette, as a test lab. Working respectively for more than a year with Elta and Rafael, the Navy has been demonstrating capabilities of the Adir radar and an improvised version of the sea-based Iron Dome; both of which have been installed on the Lahav. And by early 2018 or perhaps even at the end of this year, the officer said the service expects to deploy the new Barak-8 intercepting system on the Lahav.

“On a single platform, we’re putting new radar and two different intercepting systems; all of which are at the cutting-edge of technology. The risks are immense, but that’s why we’re learning so much about risk-reduction through all the work we’re doing on the Lahav,” the officer said of the corvette test bed.

The four Sa’ar-6 corvettes on order with the TKMS shipyard have been the subject of an ongoing investigation into potential conflicts of interest among those close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The officer declined to discuss anything pertaining to the criminal investigation, but insisted that the ships were a top Navy priority and that the service had full confidence in the proven capabilities of the shipyard.
