of course, i chose that number for its sinister connotations. nevertheless, there is currently an ongoing discussion regarding increasing the caliber [and thus range and energy] of the basic infantry rifle from the 5 mm/.22 in range to the 6 mm/.26 in range. as some researchers have recommended a caliber between 6.5 and 6.8 mm as being optimal, i just split the difference and added 0.166 mm for sinister effect.

So how would ISIS’ Abrams fare versus the best Russian-owned and operated tanks? Probably not very well—the Russian crews are professional soldiers, with proper training, tactics and a functional logistical train. ISIS, meanwhile, might have some veterans of Saddam Hussein’s army, but they aren’t exactly experts at employing an Abrams or even mechanized warfare in general given their past performance.

Unlike in previous encounters between Russian-built hardware and U.S.-built machines, the Soviet-built machines were generally export models that didn’t feature the most advanced equipment. American, crew training, tactics, maintenance, spare parts availability and logistical support has always been superb—unlike Saddam Hussein’s army when it faced off against the U.S. Army in the first Gulf War.

If ISIS captured Abrams face off against Russian crewed T90s, the T90s would eat them for breakfast and come back asking for seconds.

During the Gulf War, the biggest difference wasn't hardware, but rather crew training and capabilities. US tank veterans would often boast that had they swopped tanks with the Republican Guard, they would still have won.

I tend to agree with them, although if that was the case, the battles would not have been anywhere near as one-sided, and the Americans would have taken a hell of a lot more losses, but the overall outcome would still be the same.

A few fanatics who learnt their tanker skills through trial and error on the battlefield is not going to stand a chance against a well trained crew in a comparable tank.

Besides, I am sure the Americans and coalition air forces would have made those captured Abrams and any other significant pieces of western hardware top priorities for air strikes. Do ISIS still have any Abrams left?

Maybe not so gutted, as the compensation France had to pay them for reneging on the deal would probably have gone a long way towards paying for those helicopters.

You could never have too many good helicopters, and I'm sure the Russians will find good uses for them.

In a few years, the Chinese will probably have something ready that the Russians could buy for a fraction of the cost of the Mistrals, which the Russians could probably also negotiate ToT and offsets on to boost their indigenous naval industry, so this whole thing could turn out to be a massive blessing in disguise for the Russians.

The French presidency just announced that Egypt will acquire the two Mistral LHDs originally intended for Russia. "President of the French Republic met with the President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi. They agreed on the principle and terms of the purchase by Egypt of two Mistral class amphibious vessels" according to the official statement of the French presidency.

So the Russian fittings will not have to be removed from the Mistrals and perhaps Russia can sell the helicopters intended for the Mistrals to Egypt and still intended for the Mistrals. A win-win situation.

I recently read, had missed it earlier, that both Egypt and Syria asked this summer to be allowed to join SCO. :)
