Russia sais ... Egypt started negotiations with Russia regarding the potential sale of 42 MiG-35 fighters. Now we know some caution is in order when considering those news. But it doesn't seem that unlikely here. Although 42 would be quiet significant. Along the 24 (?) Rafale jets and more F-16s.
That would produce another capable air force in the middle east. With Saudi Arabia getting large numbers of high-end F-15 and Eurofighter, Oman getting EF, Kuwait acquiring Super Hornets, the Gulf states are really building up.

Although the articles final chapter, explaning the egyptian military is gearing up mainly to fight extremists in the peninsula, seems a bit mis-focused when we see significant numbers of high-end multi-role fighters being acquired.

Hmmm...Egypt recently purchased 24 Rafael fighters from France and has already taken delivery of the first three aircraft in July.

I just do not see them buying Mig-35s when they have this deal already going. Talk about logistical nightmare in maintaining, training, and upgrading two completely different aircraft that have a very similar role.

It would seem to me that if they want more very modern and capable 4.5+ gen aircraft that would get more Rafaels...or F-16s.

They have 220 F-16s, 200 of them are block 40/42, 20 new ones are block 53.

They have a lot of old aircraft I am sure they are wanting to replace. ie:

50+ Mirage (Mirage V and Mirage 2000)
32 F-4F
55 Mig-21s
57 J-7s

I would think they would get more F-16s or more Rafaels. Seems to me they already made a decision. Adding more completely different types just makes for that logistical nightmare.

It's the price they pay as insurance against arms boycotts.
