The much anticipated SCO anti-terror drills have officially started :china::
BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A joint military drill called "Peace Mission 2010" has started in southern Kazakhstan.
The exercise involves 5-thousand troops from China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and the host country. It's the seventh of its kind under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Shen Le has the story.
On the badlands of south Kazakhstan, tanks, trucks, and self-propelled artillery are heading to a newly constructed barracks. But in the hands of Chinese soldiers, these deadly weapons become protectors of peace.
Liu Zhenli, Second-in-Command, Chinese Combat Group, said, "After days of maneuvering over a long distance, our men are exhausted. But morale is high. We are maintaining our equipment for the upcoming drill."
The Chinese soldiers started making preparations right after arrival. Patrols have been set up around the perimeter. Beds and medical provisions are also in place, while mobile canteens have begun distributing nutritious rations.
A gigantic sandbox is installed inside the central command. Here, senior commanders from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan will coordinate their tactics over the following two weeks.
Chen Bingde, Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, has met with senior commanders from participating countries. He says the exercise will significantly contribute to eliminating the Three Evil Forces of extremism, separatism, and terrorism, while promoting regional security and deepening SCO-wide cooperation.
