After China, Russia assures Pakistan, "Don't consider yourself isolated"

Diplomatic sources reveal that alongside the vocal support from China, Pakistan had received telephonic assurances from Russia that Pakistan should not consider itself “isolated”.

“The contacts with Russia after Trump’s statement have been encouraging. They support our view and are standing with us,” said a senior official at the foreign ministry who remains in contact with Moscow.

He added: “Russia is willing to enhance the bilateral ties and engage further on defence. We have two big powers with us as Washington attempts to pressurise Pakistan.”

Last month, Russian Consul General in Karachi Dr Aleksandr Khozin had said Pakistan and Russian relations were getting stronger and both the countries shared views on peace in the region.

Dr Khozin said Pakistan occupied a significant place in Russia’s foreign policy priorities and Moscow considered it a partner.

He recalled that meeting held on the sidelines of last year’s 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov had discussed ways to strengthen Pak-Russia relations.

As the year 2018 started, Trump tweeted: “The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”

Pakistan responded by saying Trump’s “no more” mantra was worthless as Islamabad was not prepared to “do more”.

Earlier on Tuesday, China asked the world to acknowledge Pakistan’s “outstanding contribution” to counter terrorism.

Asked to comment on Trump’s statement, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said: “Pakistan has made enormous efforts and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and has made very outstanding contribution to the global cause of counter terrorism. The international community should acknowledge that.”

Shuang added: “China and Pakistan are all-weather partners. We stand <link> ready to promote and deepen our all-round cooperation so as to bring benefits to the two sides.”

China was glad to see Pakistan engaging in international cooperation, including counter terrorism, on the basis of mutual respect so as to contribute to regional peace and stability, Shuang said.

During the first-ever trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of China , Pakistan and Afghanistan in Beijing last week, Beijing announced plans to extend the CPEC to Afghanistan, which shares close ties with India.

Asked whether Trump’s criticism would affect China’s efforts to bring peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Shuang said “We believe as neighbours, China , Pakistan and Afghanistan are closely linked not only geographically but also in terms of common interests. It is natural for us to enhance communication and exchanges.”

He said that during the December 26 trilateral meet, the three countries “reached a lot of consensus” on cooperation. This included enhanced cooperation on counter-terrorism and fighting against terrorism in all forms and manifestations. “The parties will enhance cooperation in this regard,” Geng said.

China is investing close to $57 billion under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which speaks volume about the two nations’ friendship.

Personally I think Trump's statement on Pakistan was short sighted and knee jerk. When dealing with foreign relations one has to consider not just the immediate effects but long term goals and strategies.
The goal of foreign policy is to find common interest and achieve common goals. Divisive talks will not only isolate nations but push them to other willing partners.
Pakistan is already an existing ally of China and statements like that will further strengthen this tie while diminish US influence in the region.
I'm sure if given a choice Pakistan would like to be a strong ally to BOTH nations instead of having to have to pick one. This world doesn't operate on black and white and it's not a zero sum game.

Agreed....

IMO, this just dirty politics to make India happy nothing else.....

Now people are start asking questions on US/Coalition forces 16 years role in Afghanistan while still effectively > 60 - 70% Afghanistan is still in the hands of the either land lords/Tribal leaders or Taliban, no border management, no/few check posts, cant access Majority of the country ...

And other hand Pakistan made most actions on WoT & suffered the most in human lives lost (70,000) economy impacted (lost of estimated $100 billion). Despite of all sufferings, Pakistan cleared all their Tribal belt affected areas, fencing the border, around 1000 check posts being constructed, all areas are accessible.

Historically Pakistan has had a good relationship with US

From the days of U2 spy plan from Peshawar air base to Bodo Norway right up to now

But there are certain things Americans are not doing which is making Pakistan suspicious

And China now is a 21st power with global reach and ambition

most types of security aid to Pakistan on Thursday, complaining that the U.S. has given Islamabad $33 billion in aid toward the war against terror since 2002. Now Pakistanis are uniting to send a message right back at Trump by posting images of cheques made out to Trump for that $33 billion in aid.

In other words, it looks like Pakistanis are telling Donald Trump, “Here, you can have your money back.”

has given nothing but “lies and deceit” in exchange for the aid while Islamabad allegedly provides “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan.” He wants to see Islamabad take “decisive action” against the Taliban in Afghanistan, reports ABC. A Trump administration official reportedly said there’s nearly $2 billion in aid at risk.

Of the at-risk funds, $1 billion comes in the form of planned military assistance, while another $900 million is in Coalition Support Funds, which are meant to pay reimburse Islamabad for its counterterrorism operations. According to ABC, the administration official said that the U.S. isn’t shifting those funds elsewhere, so Pakistan could change course and still get the funds.

Although Trump’s move seems drastic, it’s a continuation of a policy that was started during the Obama administration.

peaked in 2007 at$3.5 billion, according to The Los Angeles Times, but the Obama administration slashed it to approximately $1 billion annually over frustration with the situation in Afghanistan.

Pakistanis send Donald Trump messages
However, one thing that makes the current administration’s treatment of Pakistan different than the Obama administration’s treatment has to do with President Donald Trump’s use of social media. He uses Twitter frequently to sound off on various topics, sometimes in what can seem to some like a petulant manner. Such use of social media makes it easy for anyone in the world to troll the U.S. president, or to simply let him know how angry they are with something he said or did.

President Donald Trump’s

is well-known around the world, so Pakistanis used the social network he seems to like the most against him by posting images of cheques made out to him for $33 billion, as if to send a message that he can have that $33 billion in aid he complained about back.

In addition to the images of the cheques posted on social media, Pakistanis also burned images of Donald Trump and the U.S. flag in Lahore on Friday to protest U.S. aid cuts. Demonstrators also waved images of the U.S. president and flag with red X’s across them during the rally.
