The WTO is used by all parties to screw each other over. The US and EU do it to each other frequently. China wanted to get in. They will do the same sort of thing, if not in retaliation for this, then on something else.

yup, that's right. america and the EU have been fighting over agricultural subsidies forever.

I think this case is way more outrageous than the agriculture and airplane cases. Unprecedented.

How can you blame someone refusing to sell? Why can they not change their tech so they won't depend on those rare elements?

can you blame a girl for not selling you sex? She might sell herself to others but she definitely has the choice to turn you down.

China shouldn't be so selfish. China is estimated to have about 90% of the world's rare earth reserves. Banning exports would wreck the already fragile economies of many nations around the world. Placing quotas and tariffs on materials used in everyday electronics will drastically increase the prices of consumer electronics around the world, denying many around the world the necessities of modern electronics.

so when is the US gonna stop banning China from acquiring their technology?

That's a big increase where did you get your 90% from.? A Few months ago a forum member posted a article on this matter(Crobato?) and it indicated China having a little over 55%?, but the kicker being its ability to manipulate prices to such an extent, that it wasn't worth mining them in other counties.

You are correct- China mines 90% of rare earths metals, the 50+% figure for proven reserves is indeed correct.

so when is the US gonna stop banning China from acquiring their technology?

Intellectual property and resources are totally different. US companies don't even allow each other to aquire each others technologies.

China can easily develop these technologies over the next decade, while rare earth metal reserves are not going to start popping up all over the rest of the world any time soon.

Imagine, what would happen if OPEC one day decided to stop exporting oil?
