Olympics 2024 - discussion thread

They're the evil ones. And I think their desperation to win will push them to eventually do this at scale anyways. It's just a matter of how desperate they get. If they don't win the most gold in LA and SLC, I expect to see them lower themselves to any and all sneaky or dirty tactics.
If they go that path, they believe we will follow and they will lose.

I don't see how they can lose in LA though... that would take a monumental collapse in US sports. But it's very possible in SLC because neither China nor the US are winter olympics powerhouses. Norway and Germany are stronger. Sometimes, even Canada.
it's ok fellas, being second to the USA is nothing to be ashamed of. We are the only nation capable of competing with them, everyone else is irrelevant.
It's not about shame; it's about always wanting better.
Being part of the G2 club athletically, economically, and militarily is highly satisfying.
Being number 2 is never satisfying. It's actually the most anger-provoking, performance-fueling position to be in.

Another question that may seems a bit too far but do you expect on 2028, how many gold medals will US receive more than China ?

So with the US's gold = China, what is the future competition? Are there any sports that both have the advantage? Can China's gold surpass US this time ?

China has only beaten the US in golds once ever, and that was with homecourt advantage. Rather than focus on the total count, I find it the most impressive and inspiring when China is able to win gold in sports/events where traditionally East Asians have not been competitive in, such as tennis this year, as was Pan's dominance in swimming and the gold in the men's relay. On the other hand, I think people should be realistic and recognize there are certain sports that that East Asians may never be competitive in. For instance, I don't expect to see an East Asian team ever winning a medal in men's basketball. In the majority of track and field events, neither Asians nor Europeans are competitive. The most realistic scenario in which China eventually surpasses the US gold in the future would be, as @manqiangrexue mentioned, would be African nations becoming more developed and having the wealth and resources to produce athletes that can outcompete Americans in track and field. It's also possible that as the global south develops and becomes more competitive in sports, we may see athletes from some countries (particularly SEA nations) become more competitive in sports/events traditionally dominated by China, as is already beginning to happen in sports like badminton. The future is unpredictable, and I believe too much obsession with winning the gold medal count and/or beating the US in gold medals is unhealthy and not productive.

Yup. It's not about shame. It's about ambition. Only THE winner wins. The rest lose. There's a reason why HK pays its Olympians over $760K USD for gold.

But you have to be realistic at the same time. striving to beat the USA at this time is not realistic.

Hard to say. Home field advantage is huge, and I expect them to up their sabotage by an order of magnitude. Poison food and beverage, blackmail, physical threats to life, ruin sleep, hire thugs to break some Olympians' legs and arms, spam drug testing, break sports equipment, possibly even assassination.

Winners don't bow to a reality in which they are not winning. They shape reality to make themselves win. Train the smartest, train the hardest, eat the best possible diet for their sport, hire the best coaches, fire the ones who fail.

We'll always strive and plan. And although it looks bad, we have to remember that this is sports, where individual people are highly prone to fluctuation. There are powerhouse days of 5-6 gold, and dead days where everyone screws and and gets nothing. Champs, end up 7th, darkhorses gold. So although I think the situation looks favorable to the US right now, these are a weird Olympics with many factors including changed up schedules, COVID, European advantage plus migrant genetics, etc... I'm not losing hope until it's numerically too late to win.

Anyway, an update to women's boxing:
Yesterday--> Today:
50kg: Semifinals --> No change
54kg: Semifinals --> Finals
57kg: Quarterfinals --> Eliminated
60kg: Finals --> No change
66kg: Semifinals --> No change
75kg: Quarterfinals --> Semifinals

Just saw the 100M dash the US won. They should have lost. Lyles's head and body were behind Thompson (Jamaica) but his stride was extended at the point where he had a toe ahead of Thompson. Everyone watching including the announcer thought Jamaica won. Thompson was faster but Lyles was lucky.
