I don't expect gold from this. But there's a very important match in my view that will happen in a few hours. In Greco Roman wrestling at the highest weight class, there's a guy named Meng Lingzhe. He is up against some cuban merc named Acosta who represents Chile but is already passed his prime. If he wins this, he will get into finals and face the legendary cuban Mijain Lopez, the most decorated Olympic Gold medal Greco Roman wrestler of all time.

I then completely expect him to get his ass kicked. BUT everyone says Chinese are small and weak.
Who is this everyone? I think the furthest anyone can say is that Chinese are not fast runners. The West basically deleted weight lifting to stop China from dominating.
So why then do they have a silver medalist in the highest weight class of Greco Roman wrestling? Something most countries can only dream of. And if he does somehow beat Lopez, this for me is even more important than Pan Zhanle.

But of course he must beat the Acosta first. Plz don't fuck this up. The guy is way lower ranked. Yet many times we have been disappointed so far...
The irony is that wrestling isn't very strength based compared to weight lifting.

I compared the differences in Gold medals that the US won in 2024 vs Tokyo 2020 for the currently unfinished events, and I counted 16 Gold medals. The US has 21 so far, so they could achieve a total of 37 if they are on par with their performance in 2020.

I basically came to the same conclusion that @sndef888 posted, except the US did win a gold in Taekwondo (Women's 57kg) and Track Cycling (Women's Omnium) in 2020, although I don't know if they can pull off the same results again.

Weightlifting China doesn't have anyone in the highest weight class.

HOWEVER it does have Gigachad at 102 kg. Let's pray for his success since that's one step closer.

I accept China won't beat the US in gold this time. As long as China doesn't come third, there is one aim: make breakthroughs in sports that China was not considered good at. Swimming and Tennis are two. I hope there are more to come.

Unfortunately size does matter.
Mildly, when the medals are equal. A Silver is never comparable to a gold.
People know who Yao Ming is.
People know who Jeremy Lin is. People know who Reggie Miller and Michael Jordan are.
Who Zhang Zhilei is.
People know who Mayweather and Pacquiao are too.
Do people know whou Zou Shiming is despite being far more accomplished in his field compared to the other two?
I knew Zou Shiming before I ever knew Zhang Zhilei. When Zou was famous in China for being a double Olympic champion, he was far more famous than Zhang. Now, Zou is retired and Zhang is in his prime so Zhang is more famous now.
Getting at least a silver in Greco Roman in the heaviest weight class of Olympics is unheard of for an East Asian and once against blows a hole in the small asian stereotype.
1. What is the difference between silver and bronze? Gold stands out but those 2 are the same. I'd rather take bronze than silver just cus silver is a regret that is is not gold but bronze is a sly chuckle that it's not nothing.

2. One person never blows a hole in any stereotype. Only big data can do that. Liu Xiang didn't prove that Chinese people are good at track, did he? He just faded away. But when multiple Chinese swimmers challenge for medals and we win the team events, the US gets scared.
I still will be quite happy with Bronze though. But what guarantees are there. Last Olympics Deng Zhiwei was in this position and he got nothing in the end.
We get what we deserve. Whatever; I want the gold. We Chinese want the gold, not to say we had 1 guy up in the podium in the heavy class.

Oh you know Gigachad LOL. You know, while the super heavies may be the strongest weightlifters, many people celebrate the heavy class more because lifters from the heavy class are still aesthetic and built while the super heavies like Lasha are fat. Most guys would happily trade 15% strength to look like Gigachad and not like Lasha.

China needs more medals in fencing, judo and rowing.

Rowing and cycling have loads of medals. They should target there. Boxing and wrestling also need more work.

Relying on badminton or ping pong is not a good idea as there aren't that many medals but loads of Asian countries competing for them.

He won a silver medal in 2008 when Zou won the gold in 2008 and 2012, so he was basically unknown compared to Zou. But Zou retired and Zhang began a professional boxing career and his success there leads him to be more known than Zou today.
