Is there indication that the North Korean knew what happened? If they knew there should at least be whiffs of rumors of such operation before this.

Ayi said some time after the Seal incident supposedly took place there was a case of a South Korean defector trying to enter North Korea by boat. He was detected and North Korean soldiers took no chance that time and opened fire and shot him dead. Had they not been on elevated alert they may have let him live.
I finally found a photo of what appears to be an upgraded DPRK MiG-23 cockpit. It is a simulator yes, but the MFD looks to be similar to the upgraded DPRK MiG-29, and both seem to be at least a decade old. I would be surprised if the upgraded MiG-23 were not made compatible with the PL-11NK and PL-12NK missiles.

can someone enlighten me how come Russians are not upgrading NK airforce here
at least they can upgrade NK mig29 to their latest version of mig35 standards as these
migs been already in possession of N Korea even UN can sanction Russia for arms supply
thing one can understand about difficult situation for Russians to supply Su 30/35 but don’t
know why they not upgrading their migs

Because North Korea is in process of upgrading MiG-29's they have with their own standard/package such as indigenous air to air missiles.
Also MiG-35 is effectively mostly a new aircraft thus only avionics and engines could be upgraded to be comparable to MiG-35.
But will not be akin to MiG-35 when comes to how much it can store inside aircraft and how much weapons it can carry.
It's unlikely the UN will sanction Russia; Moscow has the right of veto, so this nonexistent risk isn't the reason why Russia hasn't yet supplied modern combat aircraft. This doesn't mean that, if requested by the DPRK, it can't help the small North Korean aviation industry without being accused by Westerners of evading sanctions. This "aid" could eventually translate into the production of a North Korean-made aircraft that might only bear a passing resemblance to a modern Russian aircraft (for example, similar to the SU-75). But today, immediate and direct help, avoiding accusations from others, could be to supply decommissioned and shelved MiG-29s that will then be upgraded by the DPRK.
