Amazon made losses for 14 years, but it has huge and growing sales during that time.

It did not rely on government subsidies.

The sales were proof that it was offering a competitive, market-beating product that was surpassing the top retailers of the time. That is why investors piled in. If it was not making sales but only relying on government subsidies to survive, then Amazon would have had no market value either. This is the situation of SMIC. SMIC cannot offer the best product, so it only can rely on direct or indirect government subsidies for revenue.

The reality is that SMIC will likely never be as good as TSMC. Why? Because when SMIC advances one step, TSMC will also advance one step. TSMC is not sitting still either. TSMC, unlike the sanctions-hit SMIC, will have actual sales to the world's leading companies where they can prove their products. SMIC will have, at best, government-subsidized sales going against market rules. It knows it can survive while still building an inferior product, so it will not have the same incentive that TSMC does to make the best product.

That is why SMIC will likely never be as good as TSMC. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm probably not. China had an independent semiconductor industry in the 1980s... and it was inferior. That is likely what China is going back to today. An independent, government subsidized industry and only exists due to protections, but it is inferior in quality and will likely fall further and further behind. In other words the gains of opening & reform will be rolled back.
Still dreaming of a free market. If this is truly a free market, Uncle Sam shouldn't be tripping SMIC's latest plans to increase investment to expand and upgrade its technology base false pretense. The US sole aim is to strangle Chinese high tech development. How can someone claim free market when one party is being subjected to sanction while another is free to develop and advance without hindrance. China today is different from China of yesterday- uneducated, poorly fed, penniless, no resources and no outside contacts. In the 2 to 3 years time China should be able to shake off America's strangle hold on high tech industry, and maybe there will be a Chinese near peer of TSMC. Presently Chinese high tech companies need the protection and assistance of the State to weather the incessant attacks from Uncle Sam. China's present assistance for the high tech industry will nurture sufficient players for internal competition to come out with the superior quality products. Meanwhile TSMC is going to hit the limits of physics soon and can advance no further. China's investment and technology development of 3G semiconductors will finally end America's supremacy in tech high.

Chinese shipments of 5G phones surge to 140m
Country takes pole position for smartphones as cheap chips, efficient processes and network cover boost production

China will ship 140 million 5G smartphones this year, market research company Counterpoint Research estimates.

In July, China’s sales of 5G phones reached 14 million units, up 239% from January and accounting for nearly 50% of the country’s smartphone sales, Counterpoint analyst Tang Ding, said. During the same month, China accounted for 79% of all 5G phone shipments globally.

The surge of China’s 5G smartphone shipments can be attributed to a number of reasons, including the rapid commercialisation of mid and low-end 5G chips from chipmakers like Qualcomm, MediaTek and Spreadtrum Communications; the high efficiency of new product development by Chinese mobile phone manufacturers and original design manufacturers; China’s effective control of the Covid-19 pandemic; and Chinese operators’ network coverage and their promotion of 5G data plans, Tang said.

More than 600,000 5G base stations have been built and put into use in China, connecting more than 100 million terminal devices in total, according to the data released by the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Major Chinese 5G phone manufacturers include Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus.

we Chinese never waste our time even thinking about a place like Portugal

Actually, some chinese do think about Portugal. There are a lot of chinese in Portugal, and last not least, until 1999, Portugal controlled a small piece of China called Macau (the gambling capital of china, AFAIK). It was a heritage from the colonial past, and has now been given back to china, as it should. But this is just to remind you that china and portugal have some common past. But i dont want anyone in this forum to be offended by this, not least brightfuture.

China is a multi-party state under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, and?

Ok...first you say "multi-party state", then you say "leadership of the Chinese Communist Party". Do you know what a multi-party democracy is ?

Does anyone knows the difference betwen the SABRE engine that powers skylon, and the scramjet engine?
A SABRE engine uses a precooler to cool the air and mixes that cooled oxygen with hydrogen to combust.

A scramjet doesn't precool the air, instead supersonic airflow is combusted with whatever fuel the scramjet is working (mind you, a SABRE engine and scramjet engine can be put together as part of a combined cycle engine)

SABRE work up to match 5, after that it works as a normal rocket engine.

It use the liquid hydrogen to precool the incoming air, keeping low compressor temperature and high efficiency.

This is a 2002 document, but it makes a comparition betwen the different propulsion concepts for an SSTO plane.

I wonder if it will be SABRE that finally manages to make a SSTO plane feasible. Also, nowadays its design is no longer a curved engine.
