SMIC was a money grubbing scheme by Taiwanese. CCP Leadership failed on this one by letting them be the core of the company.

Most people don't know just how much Taiwanese hate the mainland.
Hi localizer,

Where can China get the talent needed for Chip development? the criteria is experience and tech expertise and Taiwan is where the talents are, with added advantage of shared language and culture.

Yes, research can be done in tandem

Lack of equipment is what is holding back SMIC. Specifically high end EUV lithographs. There should be 1000 lithography start ups. Not 1000 chip design companies startups. Just my two cents. If SMIC had the right equipment they can achieve 5nm or 7nm much easier. But of course this will never happen, because China's culture has always been to go the easy route rather than conquer the core technology such as lithography. All these chip design companies and fabs will always be content on importing equipment. Thats why SMIC getting sanctioned wouldnt be all bad.

Had these companies had the same mindset of conquering core technology 10yrs ago we wouldn't be in this situation. Instead they were all content importing chips and chip making equipment.

Why is there only SMEE developing lithography equipment?
You only need one lithography supplier (or maybe two) since they're largely systems integrator (or end up buying key suppliers, see ASML/Cymer) so the lithography supply chain diversity is more important. Nikon trying to do everything in house probably wasn't a very good idea on their parts.

I would say better to hunt people who have worked at Intel/Global Foundries/AMD/Nvidia

Just don't get hunted by US:

Hi localizer,

Copy, But the recent success from SMIC regarding 14nm , 7nm n1 and n2 project is headed by a Taiwanese, I think your advise is valid. Its better not put all your egg in one basket. I think China needed to make itself attractive for foreign talent to stay and work. beside monetary incentive, an improvement in the quality of life inside China is essential.

But we have no idea how economical the 14nm is or the 7nm n1 n2. Also, like discussed, 14nm and lower have nothing to do with "14nm", so no one knows how well SMIC's 14nm performs.

From what I hear, CCP has realized Taiwanese have been screwing them over so they're forcing the Taiwanese workers to cough up knowledge and teach it to mainland scientists. Same with any company that hires foreign talent in China, they all try to collect as much knowledge and make it part of the company instead of relying on those key people.

Hi localizer,

Yup, That's why Huawei is going IDM with their own manufacturing of Chip. as I mention from my previous post, They will be the VANGUARD of CCP IC development.

I'm "American" and I speak perfect English, you won't believe what Taiwanese coworkers and bosses (many from TSMC) tell me while thinking that I support them instead of the mainland.

Chip designer and engineer are in high demand
China is now the world's largest consumer of computer chips, but it has yet to build its own complete semiconductor industry. Clearing the bottlenecks in semiconductor design and production, of course, requires a large number of skilled professionals. So where are they? Zhang Shixuan reports.

I think CCP should do one thing to promote scientists going back:

Give back Chinese citizenships if it was given up, thus allowing dual citizenship. This will allow Chinese to travel back and forth more easily to transfer knowledge. Same for the children of those immigrants.
