Chinese cloud based office apps crash as more people stay at home to work remotely. Time for some major back end upgrade. If you are not familiar with Chinese cloud based office suites, kind of like their version of Office 365 or Google Docs, read on.

Huawei sues Verizon over patents; Verizon blasts 'PR stunt'

SHENZHEN, China/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker will square off in court against the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier over whether Verizon Communications Inc should pay Huawei Technologies Co Ltd for patent infringement.

Late Wednesday, Huwaei sued Verizon in two U.S. District courts in Texas, alleging the company used 12 Huawei patents without authorization in areas such as computer networking, download security and video communications. The suit sought an unspecified amount of compensation and ongoing royalty payments.

Verizon on Thursday called the lawsuits “nothing more than a PR stunt” and “a sneak attack on our company and the entire tech ecosystem.”

Huawei said in a statement it “is simply asking that Verizon respect Huawei’s investment in research and development by either paying for the use of our patents, or refraining from using them in its products and services.”

Verizon’s statement said: “Huawei’s real target is not Verizon; it is any country or company that defies it. The action lacks merit, and we look forward to vigorously defending ourselves.”

Huawei alleged Verizon has “profited greatly” from its technology. It said the U.S. company’s Wireline segment, which covers voice, data and video communications products, generated revenue of $29.8 billion in 2018.

Huawei and Verizon held six face-to-face meetings over the matter since February last year, according to the lawsuits. Huawei said it met with Verizon in New York on Jan. 21 “but there was no substantial progress and thus no licensing agreement was reached.”

Huawei said Verizon is providing access to infringing technologies and services that use Huawei patented technology, “such as Cisco Integrated Service Routers, Aggregation Services Routers, Network Convergence Systems, Nexus Switches, Catalyst Switches, and Clouds Services Router 1000v series, which facilitate communications throughout Verizon’s networks.”

In June, Reuters reported Huawei told Verizon it should pay licensing fees for use of more than 230 Huawei patents and was seeking more than $1 billion.

The Chinese company decided to take action for 12 patents because it considered evidence clearest and that number was manageable for the litigation, a person told Reuters.

Huawei in December also sued the U.S. Federal Communications Commission after the FCC designated the company a security threat, which Huawei denies, and barred it from a government subsidy program.

Huawei has received more than $1.4 billion in patent license fees since 2015 and paid over $6 billion for use of patented technology, the company said.

Verizon is just being disingenuous, judging by the details of the lawsuit provided by Huawei.

They have to say one thing while doing damage control behind the scenes. Of course, Huawei will get nothing because it's dealing with a US company here and despite popular belief and official law, they will find ways to screw Huawei like they always do with any country/organisation that doesn't toe the line.

Huawei knows it's not getting shit out of Verizon; it's doing this so China has cases too to pull out when the US says that Chinese courts unfairly side with Chinese companies. They can throw this right back at them, especially if the US tries to make a global appeal that Chinese courts aren't fair. Huawei can show them that the US wants others to pay for its IP, not the other way around. If I worked for Huawei in charge of this, I wouldn't even waste real competent highly paid company lawyers on this; I'd assign the case to those guys who only got the job cus their uncle called in a favor.

If the US judge was smart, he'd give the case, at least in part, to Huawei but make the judgement difficult to enforce and the payout minor so that Verizon doesn't suffer any noticeable damage and the fairness is muddled in details.

We talked about this when Huawei was first banned from using Google. Looks like it's finally happening! :D
Mmmm hmmm, I'm not religious but Amen to that! Looks like Huawei got the unreliable entities list started before the CCP...

Huawei phones will never use Google Mobile Services again, according to exec

According to the Standard, (Huawei executive Fred) Wangfei pledged Huawei won't return to Google services even if the ban is lifted, for the main reason that there's no guarantee another ban won't be subsequently placed.

When Boris Johnson was elected to the UK, I was a bit worried that he would be a Trump ally. There was no reason to believe otherwise; he was considered the UK's Trump cus they're both crazy and even look like mutations of each other. But somehow... Donald Trump found a way to F that up. I am endlessly impressed by this guy; no wonder the Russians went through so much trouble to get him elected. Did China buy 24 Su-35 at premium prices as payment for its part to Russia for this service?

Trump slammed the phone down on Boris Johnson after an 'apoplectic' call with the prime minister

Trump's fury was triggered by Johnson backing Huawei despite Trump and his allies' threats that the United States would withdraw security cooperation with the UK if the deal went ahead.

on Trump and his "protectionist" economic strategy.

"Free trade is being choked," Johnson said, alluding to ongoing trade battles between Washington and China.

"And that is no fault of the people. That's no fault of individual consumers. I am afraid it is the politicians who are failing to lead."

In an apparent barb at Trump and his threats to launch a new trade war with Europe, Johnson added that "from Brussels to China to Washington, tariffs are being waved around like cudgels, even in debates on foreign policy where frankly they have no place."
