China achieves record 800-km/h maglev test speed

2025-12-26 19:20:00
WUHAN, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Central China's Hubei East Lake Laboratory on Friday announced a groundbreaking achievement in high-speed maglev technology, with its test line accelerating a 1.1-tonne model train to 800 kilometers per hour in just 5.3 seconds -- a milestone in electromagnetic propulsion research.
The test covered a 1,000-meter track, with the train reaching peak speed at some 600 meters and stopping steadily at its endpoint after an eight-second journey.
The feat was enabled by a "permanent magnet electric suspension guidance plus electromagnetic propulsion" system, which overcame challenges like high-speed aerodynamic stability, low-latency wireless communication and the precision control of linear motors, according to the laboratory.
This is the laboratory's third world record in six months, following demonstrations of 650 kilometers per hour on June 16 and 700 kilometers per hour on July 14.
It said that the 1,000-meter test line will operate as an open platform supporting R&D in next-generation maglev transit, aerospace electromagnetic launches and low-altitude-economy projects, offering support for cutting-edge transportation technologies. ■
I am not sure why the articles call it a record or breakthrough like this article

CAS has put in operation a similar setup of higher speed, about one tonne accelerating to over 1030kmh TWO years ago.

The only thing untold that can make the new device a record is if it has higher acceleration, but then the article should have talked about it.

上海万泽 and overseas customer signed agreement for 万泽 to form JV and build factory in customer's location to supply gas turbine blades (esimated to be worth $200m/yr in after-sale service). Will use superalloy casting technology to produce the blades. 万泽 is one of a few Chinese firms to have full superalloy technology stack as a civilian firm.

Is it like a tech transfer?

According to CCTV, on December 28, 2025, the world's first 30-megawatt pure hydrogen gas turbine, "Jupiter-1," successfully achieved pure hydrogen power generation and maintained stable operation, the combined cycle system can generate 48,000 kilowatt-hours per hour.

wowww, thats interesting, do you know what is the efficiency? I'd imagine more than conventional gas turbine (the most efficient gas turbine is SGT5-9000HL ~64%)

it's combined cycle, so probably in the 60% range.

The industry's first 1000KW high-pressure permanent magnet direct-drive turbine vacuum pump rolls off the production line.

On December 29, 2025, Jidina Machinery Co., Ltd. (a member of the China Inorganic Salts Industry Association) officially launched the world’s first and industry's first 1,000 kW high-pressure permanent magnet direct-drive EP1000 turbine vacuum pump at a themed event in Boshan, Shandong. The product marks a major breakthrough in green, energy-efficient industrial vacuum technology.

  • The EP1000 pump uses advanced "high-voltage permanent magnet" and intelligent control systems to achieve superior efficiency, significantly reducing energy and water consumption in applications like vacuum drying, dehydration, and material evacuation.
  • It directly addresses the inorganic salts industry's urgent need for energy-saving, low-carbon equipment, supporting carbon reduction goals across sectors including chemicals, papermaking, and energy.
  • The launch reflects deep collaboration between Jidina Machinery (led by Ingersoll Rand ITS Asia Pacific) and stakeholders including government bodies, associations, and industrial partners in R&D and innovation.
  • Wang Xiaofeng of the China Inorganic Salts Industry Association praised the product as a critical step in green transformation, urging continued innovation to drive sustainable development.
  • Li Yongyang, Jidina’s CEO, emphasized that this milestone showcases NASH's commitment to integrating green and intelligent technologies, aiming to lead the vacuum and gas transportation sector into a new era of sustainability and digitalization.
This achievement signifies a pivotal advancement toward energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in industrial processes.

My observations:

  1. China is still growing incredibly fast in the overall Nature Index, 20.4%, followed by India at 11%. Just the increase by China is equivalent to that of Germany which is 3rd in the list.
  2. Surprisingly though, when it comes to only Nature and Science papers, the best papers (with some caveats), the difference between US and China is still very high and the gap is actually increasing with US growing faster than China. Here, the US is doing exceptionally well, with just the increase equivalent to fifth ranked Switzerland's entire output.
