President Xi Jinping presented China's top science award to two scientists for their outstanding contributions to scientific and technological innovation on Wednesday. President Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, granted award medals and certificates at an annual ceremony held in Beijing to honor distinguished scientists, engineers and research achievements.
President Xi shook hands with the scientists - Gu Songfen and Wang Dazhong - and expressed congratulations. Gu, 91, set up China's aircraft aerodynamic design system and developed the country's first supersonic fighter jet, the J-8. He is now senior consultant at the Aviation Industry Corporation of China and honorary dean of the Chinese Aeronautical Establishment. He is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Wang, 86, developed advanced nuclear energy systems with inherent safety features. Thanks to his knowledge, China has become a leader in high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology. Wang, who is also CAS member, was president of Tsinghua University between 1994 and 2003 and was the head of its Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology.
Some 264 projects, 10 science and technology experts and one international organization were selected for honors at the 2020 National Science and Technology Award Conference. Eight foreign experts and the international organization were given the China International Science and Technology Award. Other leaders, including Li Keqiang, Wang Huning and Han Zheng, were also present at the event. On behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council,
Premier Li Keqiang extended congratulations to the award winners and thanked foreign experts for their support of China's science and technology development. Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, recognized in his speech the remarkable scientific and technological achievements China has made over the past seven decades and more, underscoring the need to uphold the central role of innovation in China's modernization drive. Vice Premier Han Zheng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the ceremony which was attended by about 3,000 people. Before the ceremony, President Xi and other leaders met with representatives of the award winners.
