New Type98/99 MBT thread

This number is given from me interpreting an CCTV interview where the an official said that around 50% of China MBT are capable of defending intense battle against possible adversaries.

I suppose the other 50% is just to keep the armored units trained and operating? I suppose it's not a good thing to disband units, losing all their tradition, only to reform later.

The most common Chinese type 92 and type 86 are both amphibious. They can cross rivers with no preparation.

You also need to bring up the trucks carrying ammunition, fuel, food, etc, and these are not amphibious. Otherwise, your units will quickly outrun their supply chains.

sorry yeah forgot about the 6th division, but from what that has been gathered the 6th division only has 2 battlions so around 80 Type 99, so then that would mean its around 450-480 Type 99 in service.

Having 2 battalions at the moment of report only seems to be that the report was made while progress of conversion is undergoing. They should have at least one full brigade of ZTZ-99s by now considering this division is counted as an elite showcase one.

Though we should also count in the Type 96, which could be tricky cause some Type 96 are designated from late Type 80's from modifications and upgrades, so its hard to give a number on the Type 96 my guess is that its +3000 units in service. This number is given from me interpreting an CCTV interview where the an official said that around 50% of China MBT are capable of defending intense battle against possible adversaries.

My guess about the Type 96s is that they're a lot of them as an entire family but I don't have a precise number.

I think Sinodefence's numbers are obsolete by a few years.

To get the numbers, we try to identify be reports which brigades and divisions the tanks are. I've already mentioned the four brigades identified now to have the ZTZ-99 tank.

sinodefence information for Type 99 and Type 96 are about a few years old in updates. the numbers are accumalated from articles, visual photos. just cause one site says the number of tanks is this number doesnt mean its true. even if it is sinodefence. just cause 1 site says its this number doesnt mean its actually that number. China construct ground forces weapons much faster then other areas remember.

well the other 50% is more inland and areas which provide little significant losses. The current Type 99/96 are protecting the major cities around the coast line from north to east to south. the frontlines against possible interventions while the others are basically for support if lines are broken. Also moving to inner china in the east-south area the soils are soft and most mbt wont have much effect their so mostly it'll be APC, IFV, light tanks.

but for the time being i see them as having them in ready status, training them with a inexpensive platform, until replacements can be found. but in total the modern capable tanks are around major cities that provide significant losses in battle.

I am really tired of waiting the T-50's and T-60's series tanks to be decommissioned.

I really see the urgent need of these tanks to be replaced with newer tanks like Type 98/99.

Though each of these tanks might cost $2 million USD each, building 200 new ones per year wouldn't cost really much in China's annual budget.. ($400 million USD).

Those T-50's, T-60's series no matter how you upgrade it were really obsolete in any modern standards...

I hope PLA must have taken this into consideration.

They most probably did. But the Navy and the Air Force must have the modernization priority now, as they represent the first and second lines of defense, while the tanks has to be third.
