For what it's worth, an 2021 estimate by IISS suggest 1,200 MBTs (consisting of 600 ZTZ-99 and 600 ZTZ-99As) has been produced, so wouldn't be surprised if it's close to 1,400 in 2024.

China can easily sustain 4X peacetime strength, but given the Russian border and Korean peninsula is largely settled down, there is no need for a large heavy-tank force. Better to invest resources on next gen MBT or lighter tanks that can traverse the straits or Himalayas.

It says fired from ZTZ99A-1 has a greater than 90% chance of penetrating 220mm of 74.54 degrees rolled homogeneous steel at 2000m (equivalent to 825mm of RHA at 0 degrees)


fired from ZTZ99B has a greater than 90% chance of penetrating 220mm of 75.18 degrees rolled homogeneous steel at 2000m (equivalent to 860mm of RHA at 0 degrees)
