New Type98/99 MBT thread

Interesting list. However, I have to disagree with the Armata. The sole selling point of the vehicle would be an unmanned turret, something which is likely already under scrutiny within PLA brass. Other bells and whistles such as its APS have been rumored to be in testing or service in the PLA as well. The Type 99A2, as far as we know, boasts substantial electronic, kinematic, and firepower upgrades, and within the circumstantial context for which the Type 99A2 was built for, it would serve well.
yup the critical change is the encapsulated crew and unmanned turret. The PRC and Norinco are already capable of building such without need of the Russians to help. Why? Because all the tech is already in type 99 and the latest export tanks.
Autoloader, optics, armor packages, remote weapons computer controls only thing missing is a APS.
The question is if you can build a tank like armada why not? Well that comes to doctrine and situational awareness and of course the bottom line.
Armada like tanks place there crew deep in the hull sealing them off from the world. They have to rely on input from sensors around the tank to feed them information. That means if there is something wrong with the cameras the tank can have blind spots. It demands alot of electronics and a turret operator could suffer from loss of orientation of turret vs the hull. And the commander who acts to spot and designate targets has needs the ability to see out side his armored cocoon with almost all the range of vision he has standing in the copula.
Then the issue is concerning survival. The crew of the tank is all in one place in the tank. If the tanks hull was penetrated by a antitank weapons then the whole crew could be killed. Finally the bottom line. Because of the electronics and sensors Armada is not going to be a cheap tank and any tank built like it is going to give the bean counters heart flutters.

Now is it with it? The Russians seem to think so the US Army has also flirted with it in the Abrams Tank Test bed and FCS Mounted combat vehicle. The Polish seem to be looking for there PL-01 tank as well. In Asymmetric conflicts where exposed crew members are sniper bait or if your intending to use technologies like a APS and or integrated stealth characteristics where the crew hatches and a commander sticking his head out the top of the tank is a thermal /radar signature risk it makes some sense. Just as stealth ships push there crews more and more into the hull it seems to that future tanks may do the same. Oculus rift and 3D head mounted wrap around displays can give the driver and commander a virtual world wide view.
So its possible I believe for the PLA and Norinco to build a tank like the T15, but will they? That's a question I can't answer.

guys... can i know how thickness is t-98/t-99 armor? like 300 mm frontal armor perhaps?

Bwahahahaha. That value is something you'll most likely find on a Type 59 rather than a type 99. Type 99 is supposed to be able to engage and kill targets like the M1A2 which is known to have well over 1000mm of RHA (rolled homoegeneous armour) penetration. Therefore looking at values a bit higher than 1000mm for the type would be in the right ballpark. The actual values are classified however. I can't exactly break into Norinco and find out for you unfortunately ;)

Also....the designation is 'Type-98' or 'type 99.' The Chinese avoid using t series designations if I recall correctly. It's mostly the Russians/Soviets after WWII who use the t series naming.

According to people.com.cn, the frontal armour of ZTZ-99 is 700mm. And it stated that the frontal armour of M1A2 as 600~700mm, Leopard 2A6 580 to 700mm and Japanese Type-90 at 500 to 560mm.

I do not know how accurate those figures are though.

If the speaker is truly a tank designer in China, I believe the figure for the ZTZ-99 is pretty accurate although I doubt he would either give accurate or know for certain accurate figures of foreign tanks.
