New Type98/99 MBT thread

it's the other way around
Namer is conceived to provide heavier infantry support for the Merkavas

and Europe dropping MBTs not because it is 'going that way', they are dropping the Leos because of financial reason and lack of perceived threat

IDF MBT number are dwindling too while IFV like Namer are increasing. Of cos, they use the decommissioned Merkava to convert into Namer IFV.

Western countries MBT are decreasing but investment in inducting new IFV and armour vehicles are still increasing.

all in line with their involvement in Afghanistan, the need for better infantry AFVs and the opportunity to fill that need

not sure with IDF MBT decreasing part, if it does happen, more because of retiring older variants and making good use of the hulls

all in all, does not mean anyone is dropping MBTs

Re: »Ø¸´: New Type98/99 MBT thread

You take out the turret. Save weight/logistic/oil and the turret space convert to infantry space to pack additional soldier in. A standard MBT can't pack footsoldier in except Merkava but that beast pack a whopping 68tons and can only pack 3-4 soldiers.

Namer can pack at least 10 soldiers excluding crews. Together with more lethal IFV, they can provide the fire power while at the same time protection soldiers needed against stronger heavy enemy firepower. Israel are slowly moving in these direction. So as western Europe countries, they are dumping MBT like Leopard 2 and going this way.

I can't say you are wrong, but you obviously ignored "situation calls". When you have some equal enemy advancing with MBTs and shoot their way to your command station while your army emphasis only on the IFVs, it's too late to regret.

I mean, hey, this is Chinese ZTZ99 thread, in heaven's name one can not ignore the threats China faces from land. China is THE country that have THE MOST land-adjacent neighbors of the world while having THE most unforgiving terrene around.

Too many urban warfare footage on TV makes people forget urban is just a small portion of land battle, and full-blow world war fade away makes people forget large columns of MBTs can still scourge across the land (without too much effective counters).

Merkava suits Israel's needs, but it's a too bad example (contributed by too good 'advertisements') for any serious MBT discussion. In fact, I have the feel of urgency to put it here that MBTs ARE DESIGEND FOR FULL-BLOW WAR, UNREPLACEABLE.

the latest amour upgrade should be pretty good, not sure about the other bells and whistles, because i'm not really sure what they are and what they do

IMO the original type 99 had a roundish top like below. It was found to be an undesirable design feature.

Then the improvement variant had a flattened top and also different front armour blocks, the shape of the sight hole (the opening thing beside the barrel) is also different. The active defense system is also there.

The newest variant had modifications to it's front armour again + some other improvements:

despite the improvement, her carousel auto loader was her achilles heel, any penetration are bound to detonate the ammo.

That's the price they've to pay for adopting such system, unless they managed to perfect the kind of autoloader as seen on the AMX-56 Leclerc, or just totally adopt the Western design approach, change the crew setup (add a loader into the crew) and even the munition (the plus side would be vast improvement with APFSDS round, longer the rod=better penetration performance).
