Well almost everyone has agreed that the Chinese has been working on a 4th generation prototype since about 2001-2002. However, its number of projects and designations that quite murky. Some give actual numbers like J-12, J-13, while others use other designations such as Super-10, J-xx, or simply next-gen fighter project. For example, some have speculated that the Chinese are working on a Super-10, while others have claimed that there will be a brand new fighter based on the J-10. Some sources claim that there are two different next-gen projects, whiles others claim there is three. Also, what projects are supposedly being worked on by Shenyang and what projects are supposedly being worked on by Chengdu vary by source.

well there should be more than two models that the Chinese is workin on,and its reasonable that there are more than one institution involved in this. it is such so that if you screw up on one,you dont have to start all over again. in the end they are just gonna take all the successful models and dump the ones they dont like, like the yf-23

Can Chinese govt afford that, do chinese govt pay for the development cost of both companies ?

Well there is at least two next-generation fighter projects being worked on in China right now; most say that Chengdu is working on one design while Shenyang is working on another. There has also been speculation that the Super-10 might be a next-generation platform.

the two two J-10 currently being shown in Zhuhai airshow, probably belong to early variant, notice the old "Tri-odd" IFF antenna located in tail.

The 44th Division is the first unit in the PLAAF to get J-10's operationally, although prior to that, there was the 13th Trials Regiment of the FTTC. The two J-10s belong to the 44th Division. J-10s have been distributed to the 3rd, followed by the 2nd, and the latest, the 1st Division.

Hmmm ... I don't think so esp. as both have the latest rearward-angled blade antenna on the spine + that white GPS/Beidou-dome (?) behind the cockpit.
Maybe they were modified after their early delivery - I think I remember a picture of one of those birds without the probe and the old blade antenna - but I have to look at home.

Also the area of the front fuselage around the IFR-probe looks re-painted.

according to Chinese magazine, FC-1 has superior avionic than early J-10production model .the IFF antenna for FC-1 and FBC-1 was mounted in the antenna(even the russian IFF antenna mounted in antenna),.
the Tri-odd was very old system, during the vietnam war USAF nickname it "combat tree" ,USAF jets fighter carry passive homing device to track tri-odd IFFallowing the US pilot to track and engage the N.vietnamese Migs.

Stephen Trimble's blog appears to have some nice things to say about the J-10.

I watched how the J-10 flew over Zhuhai, in 30 degree Celsius temperatures and high humidity.

The pilot did none of the show tricks like post-stall or tail slide or pitch-back, but turns were very tight, initial rate of turn very high. It was clear there is a lot of potential in this airplane to achieve the same maneuvers more quickly.

The pilot rarely used afterburner and the degrees of canard deflection were small. Still, the airplane flew very well. I reckon it will beat F-16C or MiG-29/SMT easily.
