I'm not too sure which plane this is talking about

It talks about on June 16th, AVIC1 formed at plane's prototype examination meeting in CAC. The delivered prototype achieves the necessary requirements, technical document is complement, the processing and testing process are good and the QA process match requirements.
AVIC! is impressed with the prototype processing and wish to give more wind tunnel projects to CAC.

See, since the improved J-10 already flied, I think this might be talking about the 5th generation plane or a UAV.

Very interesting news indeed !

Wow, if this is talking about J-XX, then that means the prototype is at least partially complete.

They probably started building it in early 2007 or late 2006, so it's been a year and a half now. Pretty fast work.

试验模型 is not prototype, it's a model to testings, prototype is still some time away.

Seems like some wind-tunnel model Xi'an(一飞院) subcontracts to Chengdu(611), so might be the domestic transporter or Y-7 carrier-borne AWACS.

Well now if this is indeed a wind tunnel model for the J-XX, the PLAAF has been moving quickly, very quickly, to play catch up with the West. They are doing an excellent job. Now I'm not sure on what the final status for the JF-17 is going to be-is it going to be in full service with the PLAAF in large numbers? If it is then it seems that the PLAAF will be going with a High-medium-low mix with the JF-17 providing numbers and multirole capability along with the J-11, the J-10 doing the bulk of the A2A work and the J-XX providing tip-top A2A capability in limited numbers to tangle with other 5th generation fighters, and the F-22. Similar to what the US is doing with the F-35 and F-22.

In an earlier posting there was mentioned that CAC's 5th generation design had won approval over the SAC design. Wouldn't they have gone through wind tunnel tests as part of the design phase in order to be chosen? You'd figure how well aerodynamic it was would've been a factor in winning.

Strange thing is, ONI reported on the JXX back in the mid nineties while JANES reported that SAC had won the design competition in 2002 (though we all know how reliable JANES is on the PLA) Fifteen years seems for an awfully long timespan from the time when the PLAAF told 601 and 611 that they wanted a 5th gen fighter to the time they chose the final design, unless that post is talking about a decision made in early mid this decade, and stranger since in the 1990s, Chengdu was primarily preoccupied with the J-10 and later FC-1.

Could it be that this is a different 5th fighter program that Chengdu won?

nope, don't put too much hype into that report. from all indications, the race didn't get decided until now.
