New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

There are more than enough software people in Germany. And they could have development sites outside Germany if they wanted to. It is just that their management is incompetent.

Traditional automobile companies are used to buying everything from external suppliers. VW typically bought electronics from Bosch for example. BYD is totally different since it is a vertically integrated company.
To quote what I've read on the Caridad situation, incompetent management is basically the story
Read something before on the Q6/Macan, Audi and Porsche versions of essentially the same vehicle. The features Audi wanted were different from the features Porsche wanted and in the end Porsche tossed the Caridad developed software for Android Automotive (not Android Auto, different things, Backend vs. Frontend).

Although using the Google platform, the new Macan EV is one of the first cars with deeper Apple CarPlay integration with support for displaying maps in the Driver's display and controlling vehicle functions such as temperature within Apple's interface.

I can tell you from personal experience:

1. VWAG has separate software stacks for VW-derived models and Audi/Porsche models (one of the things Caridad was supposed to fix)
The VW stack can't unlock remotely! This is a feature the other stack has. Why a car made in the last 5 years doesn't have this feature is beyond me.

2. Various bugs. Red warning: TEXT_NOT_FOUND, Your trunk is always open (cannot be remotely closed anyway!)

3. Remote start/Climate start can only be programmed one day in advance, only 2 timers.
Does it not make sense to make something like weekday starts (especially on an EV where you can't die of CO poisoning?)

4. Not updating the car status in a timely manner. Your car is at 35% charge... 2 days ago, today? App has no idea.

5. This is not a software issue, but premium car that doesn't have a front/360 camera. This is being added to economy cars at this point. How do you expect to sell against Chinese cars which are basically loaded with Cameras and about one software update away from putting filters on ugly people to make them look good? Even Tesla has remote monitoring.

I have never driven or been in a Chinese EV, but this is a pretty low bar as I can show.

......

Thinking about the future of China-EU cooperation in NEVs does make me think that EU can eventually catch up in EVs though. Yes, China is ahead for now, but this could change in the future, especially if some sort of understanding is reached in EU regarding market access for Chinese firms. EU carmakers have the ability to integrate China's supply chain and make great vehicles, the next step will be localizing more parts of the supply chain and moving it from China to EU.

And it's entirely possible that they can even assemble a better vehicle eventually... but this is al way in the future of course.

Grudgingly admitted the root causes yet still trying to shift blame to macro in general and China in particular. According the video, 45% Germany GDP from automotive industry.
