This is a good read, not that I would agree with what the author has said. Yet from an American journalist angle, it is probably as far as "soul search" could go under today's circumstances. There would be no guarantee the Chinese government would allow JV in the article to happen, even though US government considered adopting his idea. The consensus is forming now ... the following actions or non-actions would be really interesting ...

I think the more interesting questions regarding the US is is there a will to transition to renewables and EVs? From the Chinese POV, clean energy is crucial for both the environment and national security. From the US POV, US is energy rich and it's environment much cleaner as a result of it's size and lack of manufacturing.

I don't think America needs EVs or renewables nor do I think there's political will to make it happen. Hopefully the US will eventually try harder to hit their carbon neutral goals, but the conversation around it will be so politicized the timelines will be pushed back signfiicantly.

Any estimates for how many cars each company will export and the total in future?

I'm thinking BYD and Chery will both have 1-1.5 million, and the total will plateau at 6-8 million.

Unless BYD roll out hybrids, I think their market share figure here in Indonesia will remain at a sad single digit. Sadly, there isnt any indication of them getting to do so. The most common models I see here is the SEAL, which at IDR 755m price point, is uber expensive sedan only for the rich. The newly launched M6 lose out in aesthetic and size to the Toyota Innova which are now available in hybrid.

DFSK is bringing in the hybrid AITO M7 and M9 under CERES branding next year, that will probably be on my list.

Looking out hopefully for Xiaomi and MONA too.

Same here in Cambodia. BYD seem to encourage the use of pure electric. Up to the moment, at the showroom of Harmony Auto, the formal importer of BYD, only have one model - Sealion 6 (Seal U) - as the MDi platform. But they seem to realize that they'd need some gasoline models to push sales up.

Taking Denza D9 for an example; the D9 has been considered one of the highest class Chinese MPV in Cambodia. People who can't afford Alphard or LM will consider the D9 (and people who can't afford D9 will consider the GN8/M8). But BYD Cambodia only sell EV that leave the opportunity for other importers to make money from the DMi models. BYD realizes that and start importing DMi. I tested drive their DMi model and waiting for their quotation, the actual car will only arrive until December.

PS: In my point of view, I don't recommend M7. The M7 has one vital weakness, its wheelbase. Consider a 5m SUV but the wheelbase is only 2800mm. That's simply too short!
