New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Who is making NIO's new battery? CATL or BYD?

NIO is easily the most impressive of Chinese NEVs to me. BYD has more tech but is just missing that subtly delivered panache NIO has. BYD cars are bit lacking in taste and gaudy in nature but not in a appealing way like Hongqi.

Wait until NIO starts finding their own niche tech fields.

WRT self driving, all of them are basically on equal footing. Mercedes recently showed excellent self driving tech almost completely out of the blue but they've been developing and perfecting it in relative silence for a while. Tesla is a real dud in FSD given how much they talk about it, everyone else is basically a peer. Can't get over how common competency in this field is while everything mentioned is Tesla Tesla Tesla.

What I think the issue with Chinese tech companies is (something that is improving but remains) is the cultural and systemic reluctance to take big risks in pushing beyond boundaries. Only Chinese fintech breaks this generalisation. I suspect this has something to do with the culture of hording wealth instead of reinvesting it and being okay with losing resources in exploration. Some of these tech companies are big and rich enough to gamble instead of only going for sure things. They're great at perfecting and lifting a piece of technology and developing from a base but still not so good as to give us revolutionary things like Tesla has. This is why every layman only knows Tesla.

CATL. As NIO's cars are high end and high performance, they are likely to be Lithium Iron Nickel with Cobalt.

I think BYD Dolphin will kickstart the low end EV market after the Wuling. This brings EV to Corolla prices with a car that's more decent than a Corolla.

Regarding the ET5, I don't like what I've seen so far. The car that appeals to me in design is the Polestar Precept. I rather have a car that did not say "look at me, I'm an electric car."

We have some members in the Philippines, and they should look at this. BYD has a deal with Meralco in exporting their EV vehicles over there, and might possibly lead to producing some of them there. If this is true, its going to be revolutionary for the smog infested country.

Here is BYD's official announcement with delivering a fleet of vehicles to Meralco.

@Tam Sir it may sound Grandeur But it's all a publicity gimmick, from the news "BYD will finish delivering a total of 18 units in 2022" Sir it's a joke, honestly 18 units what for:confused:? If IT'S an Electric Bus then I can take it seriously. :) Meralco being a monopoly should put up charging station around Metro Manila first! (they wouldn't cause it may effect their profit margin) Who in their right mind will buy a vehicle without a necessary infrastructure to support it. I like BYD and want to buy one But unfortunate for us local, ICE will still remain predominant for another 25 years.

With the pandemic, the gov't limited resource are use to stimulate the economy, this maybe one those proposal But the beneficiary are the rich and the middle class not the masses. If we can recover to pre covid then it is ideal But now it will take us 10 years just to reach the 2019 level of growth . The focus should be on Mass transit system, with rails as the centerpieces and BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) with BYD electric Buses.
