Who is making NIO's new battery? CATL or BYD?
NIO is easily the most impressive of Chinese NEVs to me. BYD has more tech but is just missing that subtly delivered panache NIO has. BYD cars are bit lacking in taste and gaudy in nature but not in a appealing way like Hongqi.
Wait until NIO starts finding their own niche tech fields.
WRT self driving, all of them are basically on equal footing. Mercedes recently showed excellent self driving tech almost completely out of the blue but they've been developing and perfecting it in relative silence for a while. Tesla is a real dud in FSD given how much they talk about it, everyone else is basically a peer. Can't get over how common competency in this field is while everything mentioned is Tesla Tesla Tesla.
What I think the issue with Chinese tech companies is (something that is improving but remains) is the cultural and systemic reluctance to take big risks in pushing beyond boundaries. Only Chinese fintech breaks this generalisation. I suspect this has something to do with the culture of hording wealth instead of reinvesting it and being okay with losing resources in exploration. Some of these tech companies are big and rich enough to gamble instead of only going for sure things. They're great at perfecting and lifting a piece of technology and developing from a base but still not so good as to give us revolutionary things like Tesla has. This is why every layman only knows Tesla.
