Some random thoughts on the current state of EV affairs before Beijing Auto Show on April 25th, 2024.
First a google search on "智己l6 vs 小米su7 vs Tesla 3 vs 智界s7 vs 极氪007" would bring you lots of info on the 5 competing models in the same category, which speaks volumes on the progress of the China EV eco-system. All 5 models can belong to the Intelligent drive category with their respective intelligent drive trims.
As I mentioned before, I owned an Audi A6 (C6 gen) 3.0T Quattro, which would fall into the same pricing range of above 5 models with intelligent drive trims. I can tell you in good faith that I would not think about Audi A6 3T (or BMW 535i or Benz E350) if I was in the market for that class of cars today. My choice would be, for the moment, 智己l6 => 智界s7 => 小米su7 => Tesla 3 => 极氪007. Not even close. Here I view Tesla Model 3 as a Made in China proxy, because without Gigafactory Shanghai, Tesla would not be what we are seeing today.
From that, I can easily see why US and EU are freaking out about China auto exports. BYD is already wiping the floor in EV pricing ranges below above 5 models, which (top trim levels) roughly are priced right below USD 50K. Today, Audi A6 3T or BMW 535i or Mercedes E350 are priced above USD 70K with average trims.
Second on EV with intelligent drive a.k.a. autonomous driving EV, Huawei just introduced a visual-only package, which is its current intelligent drive solution without LiDAR. It is a lower-priced solution for EV priced below RMB 300K ($40K). Some early Chinese local tests indicate this offering is as good as the Tesla FSD if not better already. BTW, a new Tesla Model 3 dual motor with FSD is USD 60K car in the United States. Besides, BYD, SAIC, Xiaomi and Geely are all bringing their own advanced intelligent drive solutions that can certainly rival Tesla FSD in Chinese local NOA driving. Tesla FSD is not yet qualified for Chinese driving because its localization is not yet sufficient for local city driving. The rumor says that Tesla needs at least one more year to qualify its FSD for China local driving, which is great news to the Chinese EV brands.
Olaf Scholz is visiting China as I am typing, bringing CEOs of BBA plus with him. Recent rumors in Audi and Toyota adopting Chinese off-the-shelf intelligent drive packages will only get louder as we wander into the upcoming Beijing Auto Show starting on April 25th.
From this point on, I see Chinese auto regulator allows L3 before the end of 2025 and try L4 not much later. By 2025, intelligent driving would become a must-have standard feature in Chinese new car sales. Time is not on the side of US, EU, Japan ......
