Bad take (IMO)

The production is down because GM pooched its EV strategy. Not because they have “given up”.

Consider that above, their EV sales in America are not even a fraction of what they sell in China.

The Ultium based (global EV platform) is selling 4x in China what they do in the US (40,000 Buick/Cadillac vs 10,000 Cadillac/Hummer)

The slow ramp up in North America means the China division is missing key models like the Chevy Blazer, and has engineered its own models such as the Velite (based of the Bolt and added a PHEV option). The Cadillac Optiq will be launched starting from China first this month.

Note courtesy of @gelgoog, GM was previously using prismatic cell geometry from LG in North America. It has been proven to be difficult to manufacture. In China it uses cylindrical cells from CATL and looks like N.A. might be switching to Samsung cylindrical cells.

Honda was also supposed to used the Ultium in North America and admitted it had no EV strategy.

There was talk in January and February about whether GM should give up on Chevrolet and Buick and shift their attention to Cadillac

Given the seemingly unstoppable slump and the fact that GM cars are already some of the cheapest JV cars (meaning lower profit), I won't be surprised at all if they did go through with this. 40% decline yoy is pretty crazy

But since it's only been 2 months since February, they might not even have made a decision yet, so may be premature to say they have "decided to" or "decided not to"

It’s finished in China.

just look at the weekly sales and orders. It’s over for GM and Honda

I use Chinese sources, not western sources. Frankly, those western sources should read my tweets to be more up to date on ev stuff

The big risk for them is that they will stop being a global car company at that point and will only be on America Island. It will be a less competitive company and I think will make the American economy even more dependent on protectionism.

Well, GM is a western company, so their strategy is still guided by Detroit. So this becomes a strategy question. If they retrench and kill off Buick as above, their EV scale becomes even worse than it is now. They will also lose all their resources in the current centre of EV manufacturing. If short term profit for the next 5 years, then just cut bait and only sell GMC ICE trucks (their most profitable line) in North America. After that you just hope EVs continue to falter outside China and President Eric Trump will keep hiking up tariffs on anything not made in USA. It’s not sustainable though, just ask British Leyland. Ironically parts of which are now owned by SAIC.

It frankly doesn't matter what their strategy goals here. They cannot compete in China. They move too slow.

The big question are the Germans

I think this is a very crucial few years for German automakers
