New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

I don't get why Chinese developers don't just build like 10 storeys of parking beneath the apartments like southeast asian developers. It's not like it's a lot more expensive
that is indeed what is being built, but underground parking lots are very capital intensive for a low value added use.

Oops, should have specified, I meant above ground parking

Something like this:

I can't remember where I saw it, but apparently this type of above-ground parking is very cheap to build, much cheaper than underground parking

For some reason Chinese developers are obssessed with apartments going all the way to the ground floor. So they either only have a little bit of ground parking or expensive underground parking

I like that kind of structure, but there's tons of low rises built from 1990's to early 2010's that cannot support that sort of parking, and use underground parking or just have no parking at all.

They are worth some money, so it is now hard to build around them.

The reason they didn't build more underground parking lots is that the foundation structure will be more complicated and expensive to build. Also, the government was unable to set up regulation regarding the number of parking space required for each apartment unit in the building.

Sales of Chinese brand vehicles in Australia, January 2024, with brand rank and change YoY:

MG: 4006, #7, -0.2%
GWM: 3124, #9, +24.8%
LDV: 1812, #13, +27.3%
BYD: 1310, #17, +390.6%
Chery: 729, #22, n/a

MG's growth in Australia has certainly slowed in recent times. I wouldn't be surprised if GWM surpasses MG here at some point seeing as GWM has a ute and MG does not, with SAIC apparently leaving that market segment to LDV.

January 2024 is also the first month in which local BYD sales have exceeded Tesla's (1107, #19, -66.7%), though I wouldn't read much into that given that Tesla deliveries here are still highly variable from month-to-month, while a ship full of Tesla Model Ys was

for biosecurity contamination issues a few weeks ago.

Specific China EV models:

BYD Seal: 589
MG 4: 537
BYD Atto 3: 465
BYD Dolphin: 256
MG ZS EV: 150-200 (est. *)
GWM Ora: 88

* Unfortunately VFACTS data does not distinguish by powertrain so it is not immediately apparent how many of the 1888 ZSs sold in January are EV or ICE models. In 2023 9.5% of all ZSs sold were EVs which suggests a ballpark 180 ZS EV sales in January.

I don't know what GWM is doing with the Ora (a.k.a Good Cat) as by all accounts it is a respectable vehicle. I think the biggest hurdle is that few Australians have even heard of it, while GWM's marketing efforts here have been poured into Haval Jolion, H6 and the Cannon ute. GWM is currently offering a significant (AUD $4000) discount on MY23 Ora stock which makes it comfortably the cheapest EV in the country.

Not a a pure NEV, but the GWM Tank 300 sold 393 units in January 2024 (including the hybrid and petrol versions). Pretty significant for the niche off road SUV market and a new vehicle at that.
