At the rate things are going Hungary might get kicked out of the EU though. If that happens this factory will have a lot of problems moving cars into the EU.

Hungary will not be kicked out because there is no mechanism to do so. They *might* lose their voting rights, but this "nuclear option" is facing stiff resistance. But even if that happens, they will still be within the EU and all the trade policies will remain intact so BYD's investment is safe. Hungary would simply no longer have a say in EU matters. The only way a country exits the EU is if the government decides to leave on its own. This is what the UK did after the Brexit referendum. 80% of Hungarians approve of the EU so there is minimal risk of a "huxit" given the massive backlash this would ensure. The EU's popularity was always much lower in the UK even at its peak. Hungarians know they need the EU more than the other way around.

I won't make this thread about EU politics, but I will just end by noting that Hungary often acts as a convenient scapegoat for policies that the larger countries want to push but don't want to be seen doing. It's no secret that appetite for funding Ukraine is withering but saying it out loud is still verboten so Orban gets to play the spoilsport for countries like Italy which are no longer so enthusiastic.

That said, I think a better destination would have been Germany. BYD are still planning a second factory IIRC so we will see where they will put it.

Hungary won't be kicked out of the EU because all its blocking is just performance art.

Orban pretends he'll veto something, the EU kicks a fuss, and two weeks later Orban lets it pass. Hungary has never stopped a single sanction on Russia or a single piece of EU aid to Ukraine.

Hungary's performance art does give it a ton of desperate Russian and Chinese money and investment. In return Russia gets a two-week delay on sanctions. What a deal for Hungary!
