New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Given that Europe is a major market for BYD outside of China and a potential factory in EU, it's not wise to sell cars in Russia at the moment.
Why not China is also a big market for Europe and Europe being closed off from China will hurt Europe more. Because even European car brands need Chinese tech, software and component to make their EV transition.

But Geely, GWM and Chery also have a large market in the EU and Australia and are selling easily in Russia, even breaking sales records every month.

They are even starting to sell electric vehicles, such as Ora, Zeekr and Icar.

I think that if BYD wanted to, it would also sell in Russia without having to sacrifice itself to please only Europeans.

I'm not in favor of confrontation but when will it end? If you give in to everything the EU demands they'll keep trying to take it a step further. At some point you have to put your foot down and just call their bluff; don't want to open up your markets? Fine, we won't open up ours, good luck.

Does BYD sell in Russia? I have not seen any reports they do. Considering their biggest stakeholder is Warren Buffet, it seems they are not allowed to sell in Russia.
Given that EVs typically don't do too well in the cold, I'll hazard a guess that the government stance would be not invest too much into the charging infrastructure. Until infrastructure improves there will be a limited market for electric cars. Bit of a chicken and a egg problem there.

First enter EU without enter Russia. Once getting enough market share and JV, it would be too awkward to ban, just like they can't ban Huawei. They tried to rip Huawei gear out of telecom but it is just not practical.

Another factor is Ukraine war will not last forever. When it is over the political climate to "ban from EU because it sells to Russia" will lower. In my opinion BYD should enter EU first, then enter Russia in couple years. Might as well first improve the cold weather performance to make a good impression.

As far as I understand, self-imported Chinese EVs are doing just fine in Russian market.
Yes, Russian climate is challenging, but Chinese EVs are routinely tested in the North East(and North East/Inner Mongolia/Xinjiang/Tibet are full of them). This is a harsh test in a more or less shared environment of "greater Manchuria". Most of the Russian market(i.e. West and South-West) is significantly milder than that.

If you take at the result of dongchedi testing, every EV does significantly worse in winter weather. So yes, it's actually quite a goal of BYD to get that range up
