Oh no, China is completely pimp slapping us on EVs and intelligent mobility! But..but..but...BUT AT WHAT COST!!!

Quick, somebody get that "suffering from success" meme with Xi in it.

Why is it that the US hasn't embraced high speed rail? It's because they didn't start it. Americans ain't followers. They're leaders therefore if they didn't lead it, they don't want it. Same with EVs in the sense China is now commanding the industry. Tesla was the leader but every other Western automakers was reluctant. Tesla is one company. In China, it was government backed hence how China became dominant in EV components. Another reason why for them to want the EV industry to be undermined.

Remember how Obama when running for President said he was going to be the green President. To him green technology was the only way ahead for the world. That was when he thought the US was going to dominate green technology but then he realized China was going to dominate that industry and all of the sudden Obama did nothing for environment during his Presidency. He actually hindered it just because the US wasn't going to make all the money from forcing the world to adopt green standards. Damn what's good for the world when the US isn't the one that's going to profit from it.

So this is not EV, but I think it is interesting because it is Stellantis

So this Titano Body on Frame pickup will supplement the Peugeot Landtrek in developing countries (basically a Hilux competitor). It is a straight up rebadge of the Changan F70 pickup, so Stellantis believes they can take almost a straight Chinese car and sell it at a premium by attaching their brand.

This certainly speaks to how the Leapmotor deal will shake out. Last month the CFO already called Leapmotor “one of Stellantis’ brands” an the opening the new Leapmotor EU office in the Netherlands. It is said they will release an affordable model shortly.

These Chinese brands should sell their EV using their own brands.

In the current political climate, the Geely approach of using subsidiaries in Western markets (in their case: 'laundering' Chinese cars through Swedish subsidiaries) is very smart, in my opinion. The brand value of Volvo and the EuroTesla vibe of Polestar is doing them wonders over here.

Maybe Im wrong, but Mr Xings job seem like one which would require a STEM-degree in any Western country, unless you already did it for a number of years. Which would make the article nonsensical...
nytimes.. LOOL

i don't believe anything from western media regarding shortage of automobile talent. just coz China installed more robots that doesn't mean they have shortage of talent. BYD literally hiring thousands of young grads same with other firms.
I think the NYT article refers to skilled labors, those who can be trained in a vocational school in 1-3 years, instead of a 4-year college. I do agree that China needs more vocational schools for the training of skilled labors, as Germany does traditionally.

BYD Dolphin is one of the best selling EVs in Brazil and was awarded Brazil's Car of the Year for 2024. Interestingly, the Dolphin that is on sale in Brazil is the Chinese version. It's slightly different from the European/Australian version.

Traditionally in this context means late 70's to early 2000's.
We have it even worse than china, everybody wants to have a college degree but instead of raising or keeping high school education standards, most federal states lower the standards so that even the dumbest idiots can pass the high school and get into college. Of course that means alot of people don't successfully finish their studies because they got such a nillywilly primary education. Nevertheless they are still bound to University for 2-3 years which could have been used for a successful training in vocational schools or smth else. But no one here wants to do vocational and doing so is mostly admitting to failing "the system", i.e. failing college etc.

Then we have massive problems in having to few teachers in Germany and basically every federal state has shortages in material and funding in education. And I mean massive, like at least 20k teaching position just not being there and a few dozen Billions annually not arriving where it's needed.

Big thing, Covid. I am kinda fresh from Highschool, did graduate during 2020 but before Covid hit the german school system, from my juniors which finished after me, I can tell it was a wild ride for them.

As a student in college, it is known to be a frugal life, but with 4-9% inflation and real wages not growing equally, it went from frugal to pretty shit very fast, governmental subsidies are not coming to education, but instead 100.000.000.000€ are spent EXTRA to the armed forces which became a token army at the very best and meme rivalling india at worst in recent years.

I think Deino was a teacher so he has more insights into this than me, besides being a lot more experienced in Life through age.

You nailed it. The "I am #1" syndrome can be a great self-motivation when he is #1, but can be a great psychological barrier when he is looking up. There are already couple of cases:

One (hapenning): both US and China know that China already has a larger economy than US. US media (拉不下脸) always refer to Chinese economy as "the second largest economy in the world", while China acquiesces (不打脸)because it serves many purposes but loses nothing.

Two (happened): Huawei

Three (future): nuclear power generation

But overall, EV and high speed rail and TikTok are clear and present "dangers". 让很多人难受

I want a Dolphin. It is cute and perfect citizen car (国民车). One can also argue BYD Seagull is a better citizen car. I would not argue against. I like both. Anyway, cars like Dolphin and Seagull play a very important role in improving middle-class living quality (similar to minivan in US).
