New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

I also said the U8 looks like the Defender (and a Rolls Royce combined).

There is no IP in design really. Unless they are ripping off the logo. Similar to how Jeep sued AM General (HMMWV maker) over the grill design and lost.

While I understand the general feeling of what you're saying, I find that cars today are becoming less and less original (similar to fighter planes). Because of computer aided design and customer focus groups, often times car manufacturers are optimizing for basically all the same things, so the designs turn out to be very similar.

You are calling the Chery and U8 copycats of the Defender, but they also basically look like the Bronco, Wrangler, etc. Who's copying who? Customers' just have a certain expectation of what a "Tough Car" looks like, and the result is a bunch of cars that look the sameView attachment 111353

Probably hired by some promo agency who is running the booth.
"Hey you look pretty! Hand out this ice cream..."
Ewww they are ugly AF. Having actual models handing out ice cream would have been good.

VW apparently got mixed feedback on a prototype ID.7 interface that included buttons, and opted for configurable home screen icons instead of permanent single-function buttons. However, the ID.7 will reportedly switch out its haptic touch controls on the steering wheel after launch, as part of a broader push back toward buttons.

If there's one thing I hope the Chinese car industry copies from the west, it's this. Buttons are simply better

^^^ Actually, VW is developing their software in China.

To be fair, many hardcore offroad electric SUVs are boxy-looking with slightly different proportions of horizontal and vertical lines. From top to bottom: Rivian R1S, Mercedes EQG, GMC Hummer, Jeep Moab 4xe, and Scout (VW Group) electric SUV 2026 Concept

It seems that South Korea's legacy automakers are done in China.

The funny thing is that because of these 2 poorly-raised girls, Chinese people are in a huff while BMW got totally blindsided, probably couldn't even believe such a thing happened and all the white people there are just like, WTF??

BMW couldn't possibly have asked these 2 girls to favor white people when handing out ice cream; they spent all the money to come to China and to this auto show to attract Chinese people. Never in a million years did HR imagine that they would have to ask during the gig interview, "Would you hand out the ice cream in a non-racist and fair way or would you favor white people when handing them out?" That manager probably fell off his chair when he heard that such a retarded and unexpected thing happened and now he would have to do some massive damage control.

The white people there probably have no idea what was going on, got an ice cream or didn't get one, then noticed some angry Chinese bloggers running around handing out free ice cream. (I heard that some bloggers went out, bought a ton of ice cream and went to the auto show handing them out to only Chinese people.) So some probably stuck their hands out and said, "I'd like one too please," never expecting to be met with a scowling, "NO!! Only Chinese!!"

This whole thing is as sad as it is funny...
It's actually rather sad that companies need to do "sensitivity training" so that Chinese employees do not discriminate against other Chinese.

For this to have happened, the national culture must have went seriously wrong for a time.

Fortunately, it seems the situation is improving, and incidents like this actually help prevent the perpetuation of attitudes like those demonstrated by the two women, since now other PR departments will get the message that white worship in China is not appropriate behavior and will be punished.

I also think if this happened 20-30 years ago, and people started getting angry about it, the government would've just contained and censored it, so that it didn't affect business.

Today, with companies like BMW needing China more than China needs BMW, it seems there was no attempt at damage control at all from the government. This is a positive sign that white privilege is not what it was.

obviously BYD & its high end brands are popular. Looks like XPeng is doing better than I expected and same with Zeekr. Obvious LiAuto

Nissan and other Japanese auto are basically finished. no interest
German automakers are doing not so bad even after the ice cream incident.

Basically, Russians still don't really have respect for Chinese products, but they have no other choice right now, so they have to bring cars in from somewhere and China is it. Russia is also a really luxurious market.

With more products coming to Russia, view toward Chinese products are turning around.

Also, Chinese companies don't want to promote their accomplishment in Russia. Especially the ones like BYD with ambitions in Western markets. It's the ones that are struggling like Chery that are most invested in Russia.

I think part of the reason many SUVs look the same is because they're big. So even pretty big dimension differences look small. Compare that to sedans where length and height differences look very obvious.

Same goes for front face styling. SUV front faces are just so forgettable because they're too large and end up being either too complicated or too plain.

For some reason Geely isn't afraid of sanctions despite a massive chunk of their revenue coming from the west via volvo
