lol, even the Korean automakers realize that Chinese LFP batteries are better

More on Battery. This is exciting, CATL is looking to industralize sodium ion battery in 2023. That would be a huge game changer

More evidence that the "Uyghur law" won't work.

I remember the days only Tesla could deliver more than 10,000 in the not too distant past. BTW, BYD will have a blockbuster month. Let's wait and see.

CATL confirms its CTP 3.0 Battery technology can charge (to) 80% in 5 minutes

...

5 min

High-rate, fast-charging technology combined with the intelligent BMS strategy makes it possible to charge a battery to 80% in just five minutes.

1000 km

Thanks to advanced 811 nickel-rich chemistry material, silicon-doped lithium supplement technology, and innovative cell to pack (CTP) technology, the battery system energy density is improved to 250Wh/kg. This enables electric vehicles to have an ultra-long driving mileage and eliminates users’ range anxiety.

±3%

The BMS ensures SOC estimation inaccuracy within ±3%, making you travel smart.

+4℃/min

Using a unique battery self-heating technology, the battery is able to warm up 4°C per minute without additional cost. It only takes eight minutes to raise the battery temperature from -30°C to 0°C.
So CALT's new battery technology can enable the battery to charge to 80% in five minutes and warm up from -30C to 0C in 8 minutes.

That's nice, but let's consider what it means in the real world. I'm assuming the Qilin battery will be 150 kWh since that's the next big thing everyone's moving toward and would support CATL's 1000km range claim. They don't mention from what to 80%, but I've seen the 10-80% standard used previously so let's take it here. That means 0.7 * 150 = 105 kWh in 5 minutes (1/12 of an hour). That's an average charging rate of 1260 kW = 1.26 MW. That's a very healthy output. The fastest DC chargers today are in the range of 300-400 kW, and that's peak rate.

A five minute charge time isn't passing the smell test for me until a new generation of DCFC stations are rolled out that can support these rates (and each station might need a small nuclear reactor beside it). A 10 minute charge time drops this power by half to a much more reasonable 630 kW - still faster than anything today but conceivable.

80% in 5 minutes!!! Swap stations are hardly needed anymore.

@supercat, thanks for all your posts. They always give me just the right kind of vibes.
Nio is still bragging about their swap stations.
The battery itself is only half of the issue. Faster charging speeds require much more expensive charging infrastructure as well as more load on the grid not to mention possible negative on battery life. Swap stations can also be used to upgrade current batteries.
