New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Can the "Uyghur law" choke China's EV industry? I don't think so. The innovation of China's EV technologies is nothing short of explosive at this point. No one can contain it anymore. Notice that CATL's founder and chairman has a Ph.D from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the world's #1 institution in physics science and chemistry, according to Nature Index. The subject of his Ph.D program? Condensed matter physics.

The CEO of Human Horizons (Ding Lei) also has a degree in nuclear physics and a master's degree in solid state physics.

The guys who lead these companies actually are what Elon Musk pretends to be!

Some more updates out of China.

BYD Seal has surpassed 110k in pre-orders. Insanely popular. The initial production is at 15k a month. They will need to really ramp that up if they want to fulfill the demand since they got 110k order in 1 month.

The now have over 150k orders for BYD Han family. Again, at last month's production rate of 25 to 30k, that's 5/6 months backlog.

BYD from June to September is on a trajectory to hit 200k production a month. June will be up to 135k according to sources, with Dolphin at 20k (after a dip in May due to Changsha shutdown). After that, expect to add another 20k a month to reach 200k in either Sep/Oct. Even so, they are on pace to pick up as many as 300k orders in June. That's crazy high and they are not going to be able to produce/deliver that many until well into next year.

Not really sure why Tesla needs to offer ICE car trade in when the wait list is 4 to 6 months

A comparison from Aussie site driven.io on Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3. I'm actually not sure why they are being compared when the Yuan+ is a lower end entry level model car. A comparison of Model to Tang would be more appropriate.

A little more on export for Chinese cars.
Talks about CATL investment in Indonesia to get the nickel mining

For Brazil, 6 SUVs arriving there later this year including BYD Song DM-i and GWM Havel H6 in hybrid.

Song+ DM-i is such a popular model in China as an ICE car replacement that I think it will do well in many developing countries that may not have the full charging infrastructure.

A little more on BYD/Brazil. I know I talk about this a lot, but I'm continually amazed that they can charge this kind of price for Han in Brazil.

So far, they've sold first lot of 50 Han for 540k BRL (which is over 100k USD)
and 35 Tang for 474.6k BRL (which is also 90k USD)
Just think if they get the infrastructure to Brazil figured out and can start shipping over larger volume than 50 at a time, then they can lower that prices and sell a lot more. Cars in Brazil are priced so high that it's very high margin business.

Song+ DM-i is expected to be a popular model. They are expecting to sell 1000 to 1500 of this model per month with possible local production next year. They are hoping for 2000 sales in Brazil this year and 20k next year. Remember, they are in talks for 10k local production (of Song+ DM-i) in the state of Bahia.

14 dealership under construction right now with 45 expected by the end of this year. Huge expansion in sales network.

BYD Han is getting a upgrade in Brazil. Looks like 85.4 kWh battery pack is coming.

Plan for this include releasing the D1 model for rental cars and taxis
Aside for Song+ DM-i, also looking to sell destroyer 05 and Qin+ in Brazil

Brazil has a highly unequal society. You have the extremely wealthy, and the masses of poor people.
The rich will be moving in their armored cars from their secure gated mansions into gated shopping malls for the extremely rich which you can't enter on foot, while traversing slums in between. It is that kind of place.

So I am not surprised a 100K car would do well in Brazil.

On Brazil, it's more about the import taxes applied to cars which makes them so expensive.
Scale is a secondary consideration

That would be one factor, but han is selling 3 to 4 times their cost in china. they must be making a healthy margin on those. I would imagine that premium has to come down as they start to bring over larger batches of cars and assemble locally the song+ series.

100% import charge on products wasn't particularly strange to see on Brazil.

Things used to be way worse. The whole point of these high import tariffs was to boost industry in Brazil. So quite a few foreign companies have assembly lines in Brazil or work with Brazilian contractors to assemble products there.
