I've been hearing about Chinese brand name cars coming to the US for a long time and still haven't seen it. First it was because Chinese cars couldn't pass emission and safety standards which to come into compliance would raise the prices significantly. Now it's all electric and I remember seeing some Chinese electric cars pass European safety standards. So what's the delay in the US? I can only think mostly political.

To be exact, the top 16 are all Chinese brands;)
In May, Tesla's wholesale sales volume was 32165, of which 22340 were exported, 9825 were sold and delivered in China, and Model3 and modely ranked 17th and 27th respectively.
Only Tesla ranked 17th and 27th, and almost all of the top 30 were Chinese brands. Until general motors ranked 30th... German Volkswagen ranked 33rd in ID4, it can be seen that in China's electric vehicle market, except Tesla, other foreign brands are full of difficulties

Keep in mind that European market will get a lot larger over time. Chinese ev automakers cannot expand forever in the home market. Things will look different when European market becomes more electric since they will be buying more vw cars. It's important for Chinese automakers to enter these markets early on so they don't get left out when the EV demand really explodes. Geely certainly has a good strategy for western market with polestar. It seems like byd and nio want to build their own brand in Europe rather than entering it stealthily through a European brand. We will see how that works out. The first step is to ramp up production. That's the Achilles heel of the entire industry.

I know this is a Chinese video about car in general and EV in particular. I apologize if anyone feels offended in this English forum. But this video really presents a Chinese perspective on the ground, which is impacting millions of high-paying jobs in Japan, Germany and US. Just a few nuggets.

It is a norm now that Chinese are buying Chinese cars in RMB300K-500K range, which was unthinkable just a few years ago. That range typically was dominated by Audi A4, BMW 3 series and Mercedes C class.

EV is the first and the largest modern manufacturing sector that is NOT subject to any foreign blackmail.

Huawei is the only company that spans tier-one telecom and modern EV. Even though Huawei is not a car manufacturer per se, it is a key technology enabling company.

It is expected that, in the coming years, hundreds of thousands of jobs in auto industry will be in jeopardy in Germany and Japan. Other than Tesla, all other leading EV companies are Chinese.

The author bought a piece of ICE junk from Chery in 2010 and sold it in 2012. In 2020, he bought a BYD Han.

from NIO Q1 earnings call. Expecting to sell 12k in June. The margins are down big time due to higher battery prices. They are hoping to raise production on the current plant to 20k per month by end of this year + Neo phase 2 plant (entering production in Q3) will hopefully hit 10k. They are talking about a mass market brand in the 200k to 300k range, but that won't be ready until H2 2024. To me, NIO is making progress way too slowly. When we look at the leaders board for May, there are so many automakers at 10k, but NIO just isn't up there.

Looks like BYD only announced its battery deliveries for Tesla after it was able to meet all of Tesla's thickness tolerance requirements.

I'm listening to a podcast today and they were talking about the future of NEV. Similar to what BYD has said, China is moving into the next phase of the automotive transition. That is the transition to autonomous vehicles. The Chinese market is right now so far ahead of European and US market in terms of market expectations for luxury vehicles. Now, everyone can make competitive cars that look nice and cost 200 to 300k RMB. The next question is how you can win the smart car race. We see Baidu getting into NEV and going straight to smart car in its JV with Geely. When people look at Jidu, they just think it's a Baidu product. Similarly, Huawei, Xiaomi and possibly Didi are getting into the market with same design philosophy. Any of these tech companies can buy the latest battery technology from CATL or BYD and work with an existing automaker to get efficient motor and ramp up production. A large part of winning the future of NEV world is the smart/autonomous features. As such, a company like BYD will not end up cooperating with Baidu and Huawei. It will seek to crush them in this area. If you cannot win the smart car race, you will just become an electric accessory company that manufactures cars for tech companies. That's kind of where Geely is at already. If NIO cannot make an adjustment, it will fade away.

If you compare that to American and Europe. The top sellers are VW ID.4 or various Tesla models or even Hyundai Ioniq 5. These are not autonomous vehicles. I turn on the autonomous feature on my Tesla and it just gives up after 20 minutes and I can't even use it again for the rest of the trip. And it can't get any better because Tesla doesn't use Lidar or higher pixel camera or more advanced chips.

When Chinese automakers finish their development and really get into American or European market, they are going to shock consumers with the finishing, the range and the smart driving features on their cars. It's going to blow people away.

Volvo/polestar is in the US but it prob was able to sneak in without the maroons in congress causing a stink because the brand is "european"
There has been a couple startups funded by Chinese nationals in Californa trying to make those 100k+ ev, i think they are living on life support now. Nio is supposedly opening offices in silicon valley and hopes to manufacture/sell cars in the US.

They probably Googled "polestar" read that it's owned by Volvo, then breathe a sigh of relief and close the browser. If they went one step further they'd find out Volvo is owned by Geely. Thank god we have a bunch of smoothbrains as congressmen.
