New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

At the heart of the issue is that most of these manufacturers rely on their suppliers (Visteon, Delphi, Denso, Marelli, etc.) to supply all the subsystems of the cars. These systems are all isolated from each other and can't really "talk" to each other. At best the infotainment system can receive updates (new wallpapers!) and apps to enable remote unlocking.
Good points. The traditional model of outsourcing to a bunch of undersuppliers is the root cause here. The vertically integrated players (Tesla and BYD) have done best in the EV space. Tesla is hurting a lot now for political reasons. But there's talk of replacing Musk as CEO due to his toxic brand. If that happens, then I'd be most bullish on Tesla among all major US car companies.

Once the EV industry has matured and become commoditised, then outsourcing to suppliers won't be as much of an issue.

But at the moment, it's a new industry which is still seeing significant developments, with the hardware/software nowhere near being standardised. So the vertically integrated automakers are doing best.

Tesla is also hurting because they've fallen behind the competition in China.

Negotiations with EU over minimum prices, investment, and lifting tariffs, are progressing.

This comes as both sides mark the 50th anniversary of relations by promising to cooperate more. Talk is cheap, naturally, so we'll see whether a satisfactory deal can be reached.

The leaders of China and the European Union agreed on Tuesday to deepen cooperation in the face of challenges posed by US President Donald Trump, in letters exchanged to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Xi, describing the relationship as one of the “most influential in the world”, urged the Europeans to “adhere to multilateralism, defend fairness and justice, oppose unilateral bullying, work together to meet global challenges, and jointly promote an equal and orderly world”, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

In a letter addressed to Xi – seen by the South China Morning Post – the EU leaders said the anniversary “takes place at a moment of global uncertainty and geopolitical changes”, saying the bloc “remains committed to deepening our partnership with China”.

Geely is proposing to privatise Zeekr by rebuying all of the latter's shares. If this goes ahead, then Zeekr and Lynk&Co will come under the Geely auto umbrella, and if I remember correctly the same happened with Galaxy, Geometry and Radar recently so this could be Geely consolidating all of its brands. I imagine Volvo and Polestar will remain separate though.

A Chinese startup China Car Custom (工匠派 in Chinese) announced on 26th of April the official launch of its SC01 electric sports car, with a starting price of RMB 229,800 ($31,530).

The SC01 is 4,106 millimeters long, 1,830 millimeters wide, 1,170 millimeters high and has a wheelbase of 2,503 millimeters.

It has a curb weight of 1,365 kg.

The model is available in only one variant with dual electric motors, both with a peak power of 160 kW.

Its powertrain's combined peak power is 320 kW and peak torque is 560 Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds.

The SC01 is powered by Li-ion ternary batteries supplied by CALB with a pack capacity of 60 kWh and has a CLTC range of 520 kilometers. The batteries are placed at the middle-rear of the car, instead of under the chassis like most EVs.

According to a report by 36kr on September 26, 2022, Xiaomi spent tens of millions of yuan to invest in the startup.

Pretty disappointing to see a tube chassis and a push-rod suspension on a car that has no engine.
