Sales of Tesla's (NASDAQ:

) China-made electric vehicles fell 49.2% year-on-year in February, as intense market competition continues to disrupt the automaker’s share of China's EV market.

The Texas-based carmaker sold 30,688 China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the month, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. Deliveries fell nearly 51.5% from 63,238 units sold in January.

Deliveries are now down for the fifth consecutive month when compared to last year, despite an increase in subsidies from the Chinese government to attract more consumers.

The performance also lags major Chinese rivals by a significant margin. Chinese rival BYD (

) reported a 161.4% growth in passenger vehicle sales to 318,233 units last month.

Other local EV competitors, including NIO (

) delivered 13,192 vehicles in February, marking a 62.2% increase year-over-year, while Xpeng (

) delivered 30,453 Smart EVs in the month, marking a 570% increase year-over-year.

Shares of Tesla (NASDAQ:

) were down 1.24% in premarket trading on Tuesday to $281.13 and have fallen 27.4% over the past month.

Xpeng sold around the same number of cars as Tesla in China in February. Tesla is not doing well anywhere at the moment

Why a Chinese Gadget Company Can Make an Electric Car and Apple Can’t

Xiaomi, which produces smartphones and consumer electronics, delivered 135,000 E.V.s last year after tapping China’s robust manufacturing supply chain.

Still very grudgingly, saying XiaoMi is a gadget company while implying Apple is more advanced (of what?).

Wait until they find out that BYD will manufacture more than one millions EVs a year OUTSIDE of China in the near future.

BYD electric commercial vehicles for UAE - today EVs, tomorrow weapons for MENA?

2,300 chassis of electric buses for India:

Geely (Geely + Galaxy + Lynk & Co + Zeekr) now consistently outsells Tesla in China:

It's like a sci-fi movie.

And YTD:

Deepal and Xpeng are not (yet?) reporting Australian sales via the VFACTS database. All numbers via

GWM continues its slow build and MG its slow decline, but the leading stories are clearly BYD and Chery. BYD's February sales were artificially bolstered by ~450 Sharks that were sold in January but not included in the data set for that month, so YTD tells the more meaningful story there. Chery's (re-)entry to Australia can now clearly be said to be a success, even as I suspect it is coming at the expense of MG. Tesla has been in decline for roughly a year now, but the extent of that decline is still rather shocking. This is a brand that finished #8 in 2023. Yes, the Model Y is update is coming, but still...

Local pricing for the Ford Ranger PHEV that is due in a few months has been released. The cheapest model will be $71,990 plus on-road costs, against BYD Shark $57,900 plus on-road costs. That price gap is perhaps a little smaller than anticipated, but still very meaningful, particularly when one considers that the base Ranger PHEV likely doesn't match Shark in terms of equipment. I mean,

That said, it seems

that Shark's price will increase for the next financial year.

Yes but it's true that the despite Trump's address to Congress today claiming the US was going to be an EV powerhouse, he won't be getting an EV ecosystem anytime soon because again everything the US does costs more than for China to do. You can be big like Apple but they still can't come up with an EV on their own because everything in the US every step of the way cost more than China. Biden made sure Apple didn't get an EV because he outlawed doing business with China which Apple would've needed to get an EV developed while a "gadget" company in China could.
