New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

The BYD Shark is in production. Australia is a country having leading access to EVs more than the US and Europe. So if you’re reviewing cars on the “market”, it might be a little weird to not review an EV that’s “available” even though not in Australia just yet. If they wait until next year to review a car that’s in production, it might come across as outdated. Besides there are Australians YouTubers reviewing EVs in China so why not?

my latest substack entry on BYD's BEV tech plans for next year. a lot of stuff

As things continue to become more compact, the DM6.0 platform will become so small that we will probably have a PHEV hatchback that’s Seagull to Dolphin sized. Something like that might sell for just 59.8k RMB. BYD is continuing to work hard to cut weight throughout its PHEV platform. As engine continues to get more efficient, cars gets lighter and electrical platform gets more efficient, the fuel consumption will continue to drop for DM6.0 and then DM7.0. It’s unclear to me just how efficient PHEVs can get, but there are probably at least 5 years of further improvement until their superior fuel efficiency completely relegates ICE vehicles.

Packaging seems to be a particular challenge for PHEVs, having to accommodate both an electric and internal combustion powertrain means that sacrifices have to be made. Hopefully, ongoing improvements on both the electrical and internal combustion sides of things can alleviate this problem. In particular, I would like to see mid-size PHEVs (such as Sealion 6) that also have at least a "compact" spare tyre. For it seems to me that the circumstances that make PHEV an appealing option over EV are also circumstances in which one feels the need to have a spare tyre onboard: trips to regional and remote areas with unreliable electrical infrastructure are also very plausibly areas with lack of timely access to towing and local garage facilities. Shark is to be commended for being the only NEV on sale here with a full-size spare tyre, but that vehicle is also 5.45m long and weighs 2700kg!

P.S. Mitsubishi ran a TV ad campaign here a few months ago highlighting the off-road capabilities of the Outlander PHEV, which do indeed appear to be

. Left unspoken was that you would be crazy to try to exploit those capabilities without also strapping a spare tyre either to the roof or taking up most of the boot!

(Reuters) - Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s transition team is recommending sweeping changes to cut off support for electric vehicles and charging stations and to strengthen measures blocking cars, components and battery materials from China, according to a document seen by Reuters.
The transition-team plan would redirect money now flowing to building charging stations and making EVs affordable into national-defense priorities, including securing China-free supplies of batteries and the critical minerals to build them.

That would benefit tesla, more than GM and ford, which will be left behind in the EV industry. China only needs to concentrate on nationalizing tesla.
