New Chinese Military Developments

Re: LFC-16 or CY-1

Quote from Richard Fisher's 2002 article titled "China's PLA enlists capitalist competition":

"One of CAC's upstart competitors is the five-year-old Beijing SuperWing Technology Research Institute Co., which came to the airshow to market its CY-1 multi-role fighter. Like the J-10, the CY-1 is a canard-delta multi-role fighter with F-16-like performance. But it uses a novel aerodynamic "side stake" to allow the plane to achieve stable flight without using expensive computer-driven, fly-by-wire systems needed by the J-10. When you dig a bit, however, you find out that Beijing SuperWing only sells concepts; it does not actually make airplanes. But they do need investors, and with the right capital are confident of generating a prototype in five years.

Not too far away, one potential partner to produce the CY-1, the Guizhou Corporation, scoffed at the concept fighter, skeptical that it could forgo fly-by-wire systems. They too were pushing a new product, their FTC-2000 trainer, which could also easily be modified into a fighter-bomber to compete with the J-10 and the CY-1.

Neverthless, Beijing SuperWing professed optimism about the CY-1, claiming that the "customer," an airshow euphemism for the PLA, was "very enthusiastic" about its idea. And why not? By simply empowering the company, the PLA potentially gets an inexpensive fighter with reasonable performance without spending their own money -- and in a fraction of J-10's glacial development period. And even if the company fails, the PLA gains, as Beijing SuperWing's managers and engineers will have learned valuable lessons to apply to future projects."

============================

To best of my knowledge, Beijing Superwing only had designs and couple demo models. The "prototype" aircraft shown in the photos may be a radio-controlled model and not an actual manned aircraft.

Upon closer inspection it does look like its probably a model but I think that article is a bit out of date. From what I understand 'CY-1' was the Beijing Superwing designation. According to Jane's Volume 41 Issue 45 the 'LFC-16' is Guizhou's single seat variant of the CY-1.

Guizhou Aviation Industry unveiled a model of the LFC-16 fighter at the early-11/04 China Air Show in Zhuhai. The platform is based upon the twin-seat CY-1 concept, reportedly designed by Beijing SuperWing Technology Research Inst and showcased at the 2002 exhibition. The single-seat LFC-16 is expected have a 9,000-kg normal take-off weight, of which a maximum of 3,500 kg can consist of cargo. A 7,800-kg thrust engine will power the aircraft to a Mach 1.8 maximum velocity and a 17-km practical ceiling, and over a 2,800-km range with 3.5-hr endurance. Currently, 2 one-seventh scale models have been constructed for wind-tunnel testing, with a full-size prototype slated to be built by 2006.

Is this a case of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, or is this some fanboi fantasy CG? Hey, just asking.

American television crews are all using Japanese Video Cameras. Do CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox News make American News or Japanese News?

Friend, you have had a wrong motive-only hear or see what you want to hear or see.

Let me tell you some from the auto business: Toyota is going to build a Camry like a very good Honda Accord; Honda is going to make an Accord very like a very good Camry.

Actually I think it doesn't look exactly like the JSOW. The JSOW has it's wings larger, and placed more central.
Storm Shadow, Taurus, JSOW, all resmemble each other to an extent so it shouldn't be that big of a surprise that China would make a weapon which looks relatively similar.

I know I may have taken what you said a bit too literally, but there are tons of bombs and missiles which all resemble each other to a good extent.

I doubt it's fanboy, I doubt CCTV would show a CG for a PLA news segment. Can anyone translate the article?

Re: PLAAF airborne dispenser

Well, it's pretty obviously a CG. Whether or not it is an accurate representation of the final product is up in the air, absent better data.

As for Toyota and Honda building better versions of each other's family sedans, well, drive them and tell me if you still believe that. Honda's feel nothing like a Toyota, Toyota's are bland in the extreme with vague steering and brakes that feel like you stepped on a fresh dog turd. Everything in a Honda, even a humble US market Accord, has a nice crisp engineered feel to it, with precise steering and manual transmissions that Toyota cannot begin to touch.

Brother, you missed my point-people are aiming each other.

We buy every "good" model car in the markets. We check them out, test and drive them, and let reporters drive them and compare our "new models."

To most people: they are just cars!

To you, you may know which one a good car is.

To me, it is just a car-a tool goes from point A to point B.

We will test good new things in your cars, and put some of them in our cars. But we did not copy from yours! We buy the parts from the same guy who also supplies the parts to you.

By the way, the characteristics of a Toyota Camry is no characteristics-a moving refrigerator never stop working.

We design our cars, but we pay big money let other people do it for us.
